Nantes

Where to stay in Nantes: the best neighbourhoods (2026)

When its shipyards closed, Nantes answered with a twelve-metre mechanical elephant. Once the capital of the dukes of Brittany and a great slave port turned penitent, the city turned its factory-emptied island into a surreal playground, the Machines de l'Île born of the imagination of Jules Verne, a local son. A green line painted on the pavement links the curiosities, and you discover a metropolis that made imagination a strategy, straddling the Loire and Brittany.

Four quarters share the centre, from the medieval maze of the Bouffay to the creative island; to tell them apart, we followed the favourites left on Avygeo. You sleep in Nantes without breaking the bank: around 25 EUR in a dorm, a well-kept double in the 75-130 EUR range, a step up in the characterful addresses. The centre is done on foot, the tram and the Navibus Loire shuttle do the rest.

Bouffay & the Château Cœur médiéval

for a first visit, history and atmosphere

The historic core: the château of the dukes of Brittany and its moat, a white fortress turned city museum, the Gothic Saint-Pierre cathedral and the tomb of Francis II, and the pedestrian maze of the Bouffay, its half-timbered houses, its terraced squares and its bars that stir the nights. It is the liveliest sector by night, and so the loudest street-side, but everything starts from here on foot.

Elegant and central, a touch calmer at night than the Bouffay, it is the handiest base to range from.

Île de Nantes & the quays L'île créative sur la Loire

It is spread out and cut off from the old centre by an arm of the Loire, but two bridges and the tram link it in minutes, and the mood there is unique.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The tram, the Loire shuttle and the bike : Nantes is walked, but three tram lines, a bus network and the Bicloo self-service round out the centre. On the Loire and the Erdre, the Navibus river shuttle makes the prettiest trip. From Nantes-Atlantique airport, a shuttle reaches the centre in about twenty minutes. A car only serves to head for the ocean or the vineyards.
  • Follow the green line, aim for the Machines summer : A green line painted on the ground links the city's curiosities: follow it, it is the best thread. In summer, the Voyage à Nantes festival scatters artworks and installations across the city; in February, La Folle Journée sets the classical buzzing. Spring and autumn stay mild and less crowded, ideal for wandering.
  • Taste Brittany on the plate : Nantes is savoured Breton and Loire: a buckwheat galette and a crêpe washed down with a bowl of cider or a glass of muscadet, a pike or a pike-perch in beurre blanc, and the LU petit-beurre biscuit born in the neighbouring factory. End on a Bouffay terrace or a gallery bar of the Hangar à Bananes, on the quays.
Where not to stay in Nantes (honestly)
  • Booking far out in the suburbs or near the ring road to save: Nantes is lived in the centre, on foot and by tram, and the price gap does not repay the trips; aim for a central quarter.
  • Taking a street-side room right in the Bouffay for light sleepers: the terraces and bars stir the nights late; better a courtyard room or a notch further out.
  • Lodging at the far end of the Île de Nantes or near the Hangar à Bananes for calm: the waterside sector is festive at night, charming but loud on summer nights.

FAQ: where to stay in Nantes

Which neighbourhood for a first time in Nantes?
The Bouffay and the château: central, historic and all on foot, with the medieval lanes, the cathedral and the terraces at the door. Graslin, right beside it, offers the same centrality a little calmer and smarter.
Where to stay in Nantes on a budget?
The People hostel near the station from 25 EUR a bed, and the small central hotels (Saint-Daniel in the Bouffay, Ecce Hôtel) around 55-90 EUR a double. The tram links everything from these addresses, no car.
Which neighbourhood for families?
The Île de Nantes for the Great Elephant, the Machines and the marine-worlds carousel, or the Jardin des Plantes area for its glasshouses, play areas and Claude Ponti sculptures. The tram and the Navibus shuttle also delight children.
Which neighbourhood for going out at night?
The Bouffay packs bars and terraces into its medieval lanes, the Graslin quarter the brasseries and venues, and the Île de Nantes quays around the Hangar à Bananes the hip waterside version. Everything joins on foot.
Do you need a car in Nantes?
No: a compact, pedestrian centre, three tram lines, buses, Bicloo and the Navibus river shuttle. Keep a car for a trip to the ocean, Pornic or the muscadet vineyards, with a hotel that has parking, rare and dear in the centre.
How much does a hotel night cost in Nantes?
Reckon around 25 EUR for a dorm bed, 70 to 130 EUR for a comfortable central double, and 150 EUR and up for a charming address like the Sozo or the Radisson. Summer's Voyage à Nantes forms the peak, to book early.
