Visiting Port-Cros: The secret island where nature calls the shots

The rhythmic sound of waves hitting the shore blends with the steady hum of cicadas, while the air carries the scent of myrtle and mastic. On the island of Port-Cros, time seems to stop, pulling every visitor into a protected Mediterranean landscape. You are in the heart of France's first terrestrial and marine national park, a place where disconnecting from the world finally feels natural.

Is Port-Cros for you?

If your ideal trip involves escaping the noise, hiking through fragrant scrubland to reach isolated coves, or exploring thriving marine ecosystems, Port-Cros is your sanctuary. The island caters to nature lovers, serious hikers, divers, and those seeking true silence. If you are looking for nightlife, endless shopping, or beaches lined with lounge chair rentals, you will be disappointed. The island sticks to simplicity and authenticity.

There are no cars and no honking, just the wind and the sea. Expect to pay a premium compared to the mainland for lodging and meals, as everything must be ferried over by boat. Most activities like hiking and swimming are free, but diving or gear rentals come with a cost. Pack your best walking shoes, as that is your only way to get around.

Hiking through the wild

Port-Cros is a hiker's playground. Marked trails wind through dense, fragrant vegetation, offering sweeping views of the sea. Three main routes showcase the island: the circuit des Crêtes, the circuit des Forts, and the circuit de Port Man. Each path reveals a different side of the terrain, from holm oak forests to Mediterranean scrub and wide-open coastal vistas.

The trails lead to hidden spots like the beach at Palud or rocky coves perfect for a cold dip. Nature is in charge here, and the local wildlife is often visible if you are quiet: look for seabirds, lizards, and if you are lucky, bottlenose dolphins offshore.

Pro tip: Bring sturdy walking shoes, plenty of water, and sunscreen. Even on overcast days, the sun is intense. Start your hikes early in the morning to beat the heat and catch the best light.

Underwater exploration: The snorkeling trail

One of the true highlights of Port-Cros is the sentier sous-marin de la Palud. With a mask, snorkel, and fins, you can follow an underwater trail marked by submerged signs. It is an accessible way to see the richness of Mediterranean marine life: posidonia seagrass, sargo, saddled seabream, and occasionally small groupers waiting in their natural habitat.

Beyond this trail, the island's clear waters are packed with dive sites for every skill level. Local clubs offer introductory dives and excursions to shipwrecks and drop-offs filled with coral and colorful fish.

Pro tip: The snorkeling trail at Palud gets busy. To avoid the crowds, head out early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The water is incredibly clear, but wear a rash guard to protect your back from the sun while you are on the surface.

The forts: Sentinels of history

Port-Cros served as a strategic defensive point for centuries, and its forts are the evidence. The Fort du Moulin is the easiest to reach and looms over the port with a great view. The restored Fort de l'Estissac hosts exhibits on the island's history and the park's biodiversity. The more remote Fort de Port Man and the harder-to-reach Fort de Vigie serve as historical landmarks along your hikes, telling the story of years of maritime defense.

Where to eat and drink on Port-Cros?

Options are limited but charming. The small village of Port-Cros has a few restaurants and bars serving simple, flavorful dishes, often featuring fresh local seafood. Expect fresh salads, grilled fish, and local Provençal specialties. Remember that every ingredient is imported, which is reflected in the prices.

Packing a picnic for a long hike to eat in a secluded cove is often the best move for a memorable afternoon.

Where to stay on and around Port-Cros?

Accommodations on the island are very limited, consisting mostly of one historic hotel and a few guesthouses. You must book well in advance, especially during the high season, as space is tight and prices are high. If you cannot find a room or have a strict budget, consider staying on Porquerolles or on the mainland in Hyères and visiting as a day trip.

How to get there and get around?

You can only reach Port-Cros by boat. Shuttles depart regularly from Hyères (La Tour Fondue) and Le Lavandou. The crossing is short but can be choppy depending on the sea state. Once you arrive, you travel entirely on foot. Cars, motorbikes, and even bicycles are strictly prohibited. This is an island meant to be explored one step at a time.

When to go?

The shoulder seasons of late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) are the best times to visit. The weather is usually sunny and mild, perfect for hiking and swimming, and the crowds are thinner. Summer (July-August) is very hot and draws larger crowds, making the trails and the snorkeling path much busier. In winter, the island is quiet, but the wind can be intense and many services shut down. Late spring is arguably the most magical time to be here.

A little paradise

Looking for a more secluded spot that is a bit harder to get to? This is the one! It is a truly lovely little island with a summer paradise vibe. Bikes aren't allowed, so you will have to walk. I recommend it mostly for hiking enthusiasts, but there is something for all levels. Plus, the nature and the beaches are magnificent. So, it is an effort that is worth it!
