Visiting Chevreuse
Chevreuse is a small town in the Yvelines department of Ile-de-France, located about 20 miles southwest of Paris. It sits right in the heart of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Natural Park, a landscape of rolling hills and woods that feels a world away from the city. Think of it as a quiet, green escape similar to the rural stretches of the Hudson Valley. Beyond the trails, it is a town with a genuine local culture and a distinct personality.
A town of art and history
History here is not just in the books, it is part of the local identity. Notable figures like Cyrano de Bergerac, Jean Racine, Raymond Devos, Pierre de Coubertin, Ingrid Bergman, and Michel Tournier all spent time here. The area is also defined by the estates and castles built by the nobility over the centuries. You can visit the château de Dampierre and the château de Breteuil, both dating back to the 17th century, or the château de la Madeleine, which dates to the 11th century.
Art lovers should head to the musée de la sculpture at the Fondation Coubertin or the National Museum of Port-Royal des Champs. Many local artists and craftspeople maintain studios in town, and the area was actually the birthplace of the Cernay landscape painting movement. You will see their influence in the well-preserved facades and the floral displays throughout the streets.
The abbaye des Vaux de Cernay, built next to a small mill, and the prieuré Saint-Saturnin are two of the most significant religious sites nearby. If you want to see the town from a different perspective, walk the promenade des petits ponts to see the old wash houses and tanneries that line the river.
Ideal for walkers and cyclists
The parc naturel régional de la haute vallée de Chevreuse is an expansive playground for outdoor enthusiasts. With its mix of rivers, forests, and meadows, it is a popular spot for hikers and cyclists during the warmer months. Several of these landscapes are officially protected for their natural beauty. For a great vantage point and maps of local trails, head to the château de la Madeleine, which serves as the park's main visitor center. You can explore the woods of Chevreuse, the forest of Claireau, or the departmental forest of Méridon at your own pace. If you are a literature fan, the chemin de Jean Racine is a dedicated trail that honors the famous playwright and poet.
When to go
Summer is the most pleasant time to visit and take advantage of the outdoor atmosphere. Spring and autumn are also excellent seasons for walking through the town and the surrounding countryside when the crowds are thinner.
How to get there
Chevreuse is an easy trip from Paris. By car, it takes about 50 minutes via the A6B motorway. Alternatively, you can take the RER B train line to the Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse station. From there, you can either walk for 30 minutes or catch a bus, which takes about 10 minutes.
