Apart from the Roman theater, the ruins are in pretty bad shape and it is quite difficult to get a sense of what the place must have been like in the past. It was clearly a huge thermal center, frequented by Roman emperors! On the other hand, the setting, especially Pamukkale, is exceptional.

Another marvel in southern Turkey, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ancient site of Ephesus is worth the trip, even if you are not a huge fan of ruins. I remember coming across a large number of cats lounging on the cobblestones there. The Library of Celsus is particularly remarkable. A fun detail, in the nearby town of Selçuk, you will see many... stork nests!

Pretty well preserved, this amphitheater is still impressive and you can imagine yourself back in ancient times. If you are lucky enough to be accompanied by a good guide, you can learn a lot of things about the history of the region that used to be called Asia Minor.

Originally a basilica, then a mosque, Hagia Sophia is a museum today. You go there mainly to see its architecture, its esplanade, and the many mosaics that decorate its interior. A must-see in Istanbul in my opinion.

I have been there twice, a few years apart, and Topkapi is still just as beautiful and is a must for any visit to Istanbul. I recommend the little extra cost to go visit the harem. The palace rooms are superb, the rose-filled gardens are magnificent, and the terrace offers a pretty view of the sea. Plus, there are tons of cats in the gardens, a little bonus for me!!!

During my first trip to Istanbul, I hadn't even heard of the Basilica Cistern. During my second visit, I did my research and decided to go. There isn't much to see per se, but the site is pretty unique. The dim lighting and all those columns give the place a unique atmosphere (and a refreshing one if you visit the city in the middle of summer!). I found the place very beautiful and relaxing despite all the tourists. There is the famous Medusa column that is different from the others, and which is an important element in the novel Inferno by Dan Brown.

You cannot go to Istanbul without visiting Hagia Sophia. Even if the wait can be long! The mix of religions makes this church-mosque-museum a unique place that gives you an impression of majestic grandeur. Some scenes from Dan Brown's book Inferno also take place there. Before you leave, you definitely should not forget to go to the weeping column to insert your thumb and make a full turn so your wish comes true!

During my first trip to Istanbul, I was content just seeing the tower from the outside and having dinner right next to it. A few years later, when I returned, I decided to go up to the top. It is a bit crowded up there, but the view is really beautiful and I did not regret the visit. It is not a priority for someone who is short on time to see the city, but for a long stay or a second visit to the city, it was very nice.

It is truly very beautiful and of course looks more modern than Hagia Sophia right across the way. Admission is free, and they lend you a jumpsuit to cover your hair, knees, and shoulders, which can be pretty funny when you end up dressed like a Smurf! All joking aside, the interior is stunning and even though you do not stay very long, it is worth the trip.
