Visiting Topkapi Palace
Some sites command attention through their design and the stories they hold. Topkapi Palace is one of those places. Built on the ancient acropolis of Byzantium, it overlooks the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus, and the Sea of Marmara. From 1465 to 1853, Ottoman sultans and their families lived here, leaving their mark on the architecture of this seat of power. More than just a residence, it functioned as a center for education, art, and culture. Behind its 3 miles of defensive walls, history was written. Now operating as a museum, the palace and its grounds are a UNESCO World Heritage site, and exploring them is a memorable experience.
Four courtyards spanning nearly four centuries of power and pageantry
Standing before the Imperial Gate, you get your first look at Ottoman grandeur. A paved square marks the first courtyard, which served as the parade ground. The Byzantine church of Aya Irini (Hagia Irene) stands here as the first cathedral of Constantinople, showcasing the architectural style of the 4th century. Ortakapi, the Middle Gate, leads to a park filled with pavilions, kiosks, and the grand palace kitchens, where a collection of Chinese porcelain is displayed. The Imperial Council chamber is to the left, and just beyond it, you will find the Outer Treasury, housing a collection of arms and armor. The entrance to the Harem reveals an intimate world of 300 rooms, though only one floor is open to the public. The interiors are impressive, featuring domes, tile panels, stained glass, and a pool. A mosque with a mihrab leads to the third courtyard, the private domain of the sultans, where a room displaying their 36 portraits introduces you to the rulers themselves. The wealth of these decision makers is on full display in the Imperial Treasury, which holds rubies, jade, and diamonds inside a building dating back to Mehmet the Conqueror, the founder of the palace. A final courtyard completes the site with tulip gardens, marble terraces, and kiosks, including the Baghdad Kiosk, which offers a commanding view. Plan on spending several hours here, as this 173-acre site is dense with history.

I have been there twice, a few years apart, and Topkapi is still just as beautiful and is a must for any visit to Istanbul. I recommend the little extra cost to go visit the harem. The palace rooms are superb, the rose-filled gardens are magnificent, and the terrace offers a pretty view of the sea. Plus, there are tons of cats in the gardens, a little bonus for me!!!
