Visiting the Gardens of the Fountain in Nimes, a peaceful refuge with ancient roots

Located in the heart of Nimes, the Gardens of the Fountain rank among the oldest public parks in Europe, blending Roman ruins with French landscaping and Mediterranean flora.

Exploring history on foot

Designed in the 18th century around a sacred spring once venerated by the Romans, these gardens showcase notable remnants of the city's ancient past. As you wander, you will come across the Tour Magne, an impressive structure dating back to the era of Augustus. Once you climb its steps, you get a clear, panoramic view over the city.

The ruins of the Temple de Diane (Temple of Diana), whose exact purpose remains a subject of debate among historians, add a mysterious atmosphere to your walk.

Relaxing in a green setting

With its shaded paths, statues, and pools fed by the famous spring, the Gardens of the Fountain encourage slow-paced contemplation. Botany enthusiasts will appreciate the Mediterranean plant life, where cypresses, plane trees, palms, and laurels fill every corner, providing shade and relief during hot summer afternoons.

Feel free to take a seat on one of the many benches to enjoy the natural scenery at your own pace.

A venue active throughout the year

Beyond the quiet history, the Gardens of the Fountain serve as a social hub for cultural events. From temporary exhibits held outdoors to summer concerts, the park regularly hosts a variety of artistic programs. On Sunday mornings, it becomes a favorite spot for locals to go for family walks or outdoor yoga sessions.

Regardless of the season, this garden remains a central part of daily life in Nimes.

A very refreshing haven of peace

A little peaceful paradise for walking, enjoying the cool air, and lying in the grass. When it is hot, the pools and the shade of the Mediterranean trees offer a more than welcome refuge. While wandering along the paths, I admired the statues, the fountains, and the pretty arcades reflected in the water, and I climbed up to the Tour Magne. The view over the city of Nîmes is splendid. Not to be missed!

A beautiful green haven

This park was a really great surprise! It is a good place to decompress when it is hot outside (and it can actually get very hot in this region). I loved being able to discover historical ruins as I walked along. The mix of styles and eras makes the place very charming. A walk that combines relaxation and elegance!

A peaceful haven in the heart of the city

The Jardins de la Fontaine in Nîmes are, in my opinion, a haven of peace in the heart of the city, easily accessible from the historic center. This beautiful green lung is perfect for a stroll among the fountains, statues, and Mediterranean vegetation. The climb up to the Tour Magne, while a bit of a workout, is really worth the trip. The panoramic view is splendid.

An original pool

Les Jardins de la Fontaine is a beautiful 15-hectare park just on the edge of the city center. It is kind of what is missing in its neighbor, Montpellier. You can walk around its impressive pool, built around the original Nîmes spring, or stroll through its gardens and tree-lined paths. It is a shame that there is so little activity around the park, as there are only fast food spots except for one rather expensive restaurant.

Gardens of the Fountain, a little gem in the center of Nîmes

Having this much space right in the city center, especially for a fairly small city, is an incredible stroke of luck. In my opinion, the reputation of these gardens is underrated. They are absolutely magnificent, both the lower gardens where you can lounge on the lawn by the ponds (watch out, there is an old swan that bites...), and the upper gardens that lead to the Tour Magne. A total immersion in history while you relax.
