Visiting the Chester Beatty Library

The Chester Beatty Library is an Irish institution founded in 1950 in Dublin. It houses a collection of rare manuscripts and artifacts dedicated to the religions, rites, and cultures of the world. Since 2000, the library has been located within the grounds of the Dublin Castle.

A library that functions as a museum

Despite its name, the Chester Beatty Library is much more than a traditional library. It operates as a prestigious museum containing artistic collections from major global cultures and faiths. The institution is named for its generous benefactor, Sir Alfred Chester Beatty, a wealthy mining magnate who built his fortune in the United States. He donated a lifelong collection gathered over more than 30 years, including hundreds of manuscripts, prints, decorative objects, and art books from Asia and the Far East. This collection earned the library international recognition, and in 2002, it was named European Museum of the Year.

Exploring the Chester Beatty Library

The library now holds over 20,000 pieces, organized into two main wings, Sacred Traditions and Artistic Traditions. The first floor focuses on the Western, Islamic, and East Asian worlds. Exhibits include Chinese jade books, Japanese miniature containers, and paintings from the Mughal imperial court.

The second floor illustrates the rituals of the world's major religions, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. You will see unique 9th-century copies of the Quran, papyrus scrolls dating back to 1100 BC, and some of the oldest known fragments of the Old and New Testament. Most of these items are displayed in climate-controlled cases, while others may be viewed with special permission.

The museum architects designed the space to highlight these delicate objects, which are kept under strict conservation standards. A high-quality fiber-optic lighting system provides an effective display for the tables and cabinets throughout the galleries.

Great free visit

This free museum houses the collection of art objects and other items belonging to Mr. Beatty, mostly pieces coming from Asia. The pieces are incredible, and there are plenty of videos that explain the different techniques, like painting and printing. Don't hesitate to go!
