Visiting Trinity College

Trinity College is the oldest university in Ireland and the only one open to visitors. Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, it sits in the heart of Dublin. It is a prestigious institution known for the academic rigor of its programs.

A brief history

Modeled after Oxford and Cambridge, the university restricted admission to Protestant, English-speaking men until the late 18th century. Over time, Catholics were granted entry, and eventually, all faiths were accepted. It was not until 1904 that women were permitted to enroll at Trinity College. Historically, it was a highly selective school, catering primarily to the elite and top-tier scholars.

The campus spans roughly 50 acres. The grounds are free to enter, allowing you to walk among the Victorian-style buildings. Notable alumni include Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Douglas Hyde, Bram Stoker, and Jonathan Swift.

The university serves nearly 13,000 students annually from Ireland and abroad, offering degrees in sociology, theater, law, medicine, and engineering. It remains the largest and oldest university in Ireland and consistently ranks among the top 100 global institutions for social sciences.

Exploring the campus

The campus blends historic architecture with modern additions, allowing for an expanded curriculum and a larger student body. Past and present collide here, as the Victorian buildings sit alongside contemporary art like the Sphere within Sphere by Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro. The main square serves as the primary entrance, featuring grand, imposing architecture. The student body is international, giving the campus a multilingual atmosphere.

Do not miss the Old Library, home to the famous The Long Room. Renowned worldwide for its massive collection of rare and ancient texts spanning two floors, it is also a significant architectural landmark. The library hosts an exhibition on the Book of Kells and houses the Brian Boru harp. The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript featuring intricate ornamental designs, created by Celtic monks around the year 800. It is considered a masterpiece of Irish Christianity and Insular art.
