Visiting the Serra das Paridas Archaeological Site
Located about 12 miles from Lençóis, the Serra das Paridas Archaeological Site holds one of the most compelling collections of rock art in the region. These carvings date back several millennia and provide a glimpse into the lives of the earliest inhabitants of the Chapada Diamantina, continuing to challenge modern archaeologists.
Enigmatic rock paintings
The site's rock faces are covered in human, animal, and geometric figures drawn in red ochre. Some scenes appear to depict rituals, while others remain open to various interpretations. One of the most famous motifs is a figure often compared to an alien, which fuels ongoing debate and visitor curiosity.
Guided tours for context
Because the site is protected, it is only accessible with a local guide. These experts help decode the paintings and place the site within its broader anthropological and historical context. Guides also share current theories regarding the civilizations that left these marks and the specific techniques used to create the artwork.
A preserved natural setting
Beyond its archaeological value, Serra das Paridas sits in a landscape typical of the Brazilian sertão (hinterlands). The trail leading to the carvings winds through rocky terrain and semi-arid vegetation, offering a direct experience with the local ecosystem. The visit is particularly rewarding in the late afternoon, when the light highlights the warm tones of the paintings.
Even though it is a bit out of the way, this 8,000+ year old archaeological site is worth the trip! The guardian, who also gives the guided tour, is really nice. It is a shame that the state does not put more resources into doing further investigations, better protecting the cave paintings, and showcasing the site.
