Visiting Chapada Diamantina National Park, a natural paradise in the heart of Brazil

Located in the state of Bahia, Chapada Diamantina National Park is a vast region of plateaus, canyons, and waterfalls that draws nature lovers and hikers. Once a land of diamond prospectors, which gave the area its name, it is now an ecological sanctuary featuring dramatic landscapes and rich biodiversity.

Hiking for all skill levels

The park is crisscrossed by numerous trails that allow you to explore its varied terrain. Among the most popular, the trek to the top of Pai Inácio offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys, while the Vale do Pati provides a deeper immersion into the wilderness through multi-day self-guided hikes. Some routes pass by old miner caves, serving as remnants of the region's diamond mining past.

Waterfalls and natural pools

The park is home to impressive waterfalls, including Fumaça Waterfall, one of the tallest in Brazil with a 340-meter free fall. Accessible after a hike of about two hours, it offers a striking vantage point. Further down in the valley, Poço Azul is a submerged cave where the translucent water takes on a blue hue in the sunlight, making it a popular spot for swimming and snorkeling.

Protected flora and fauna

With its tropical forests, savannas, and ancient rock formations, Chapada Diamantina serves as a refuge for many animal and plant species. You might spot monkeys, toucans, and armadillos along the trails. Some endemic plants grow only in this region, such as the rare bromeliads that add color to the cliff faces.
