Visiting Senanque Abbey, in the heart of the Provence lavender fields
Tucked into a quiet valley within the rolling hills of the Luberon, Senanque Abbey captures the essence of a spiritual, historic Provence. As you arrive, the scent of lavender fills the air, and the quiet atmosphere of this site encourages a moment of reflection.
Why visit Senanque Abbey?
Founded in 1148, this Cistercian abbey is a Romanesque architecture treasure that serves as a living record of medieval monastic life. The site remains home to an active monastic community, keeping the history and spiritual purpose of the abbey present today.
It is also a primary stop for photography enthusiasts, who come for the rows of lavender that frame the monastery during the summer months.
Architectural highlights to discover
During your visit, make sure to see the abbey church, which is understated and majestic, typical of Provençal Romanesque design. Its barrel-vaulted ceiling, clean lines, and soft natural light are designed for meditation. The cloister is equally impressive, acting as a quiet sanctuary with elegant arches that reflect the simple, balanced aesthetic preferred by Cistercian monks.
You can also explore the monks' dormitory and the chapter house, where exhibits detail the monastic history and the daily routines of the brothers over the centuries.
Lavender fields: an iconic symbol of Provence
From late June to early August, the abbey is surrounded by a sea of purple, making it one of the most photographed locations in Provence. These lavender fields provide a visual backdrop that adds to the calm and beauty of the site. This natural display draws many visitors each year looking for a genuine Provençal experience.

Just the drive to Senanque Abbey is worth the trip because the setting is so beautiful. The lavender fields surrounding it are splendid and offer great photo opportunities. You can tour the abbey, and monks still live there. Despite the crowds, I recommend going in June or July when it is in bloom, and then extending your visit to the charming village of Gordes.
