Visiting the Kyoto Imperial Palace, a relic of feudal Japan
Located in the heart of Kyoto Gyoen, a sprawling public park, the Kyoto Imperial Palace served as the official residence of the Emperor of Japan until the 19th century. Its refined architecture and meticulously manicured grounds offer a glimpse into the era when Kyoto stood as the imperial capital.
A look at the former imperial court
Constructed from wood and topped with traditional tile roofs, the palace stands as a primary example of classical Japanese design. The site contains several ceremonial halls and pavilions, including the Shishinden, which was historically reserved for imperial coronation ceremonies. Visitors can observe rice paper wall panels decorated with intricate paintings and wide sliding doors that open onto precisely arranged gardens.
Refined landscapes
The palace is surrounded by gardens featuring a variety of compositions, including ponds, wooden bridges, and pine trees pruned with exact precision. Paths lined with cherry trees make this a popular destination in the spring, when sakura blossoms cover the landscape. In the autumn, maples turn deep shades of red and gold, providing a quiet setting for a walk.
Limited access and a preserved atmosphere
Unlike other historic sites in Kyoto, the Kyoto Imperial Palace is only accessible during specific periods or via guided tours. Admission is free, though it is smart to check the operating schedule in advance. Even from the perimeter, the walls and the expansive grounds of Kyoto Gyoen allow you to experience the solemnity of the site, well removed from the city traffic.
Beautiful gardens, and the palace is nice to visit. Guided tours are available in English or you can use an audio guide. You have to plan this visit in advance and book ahead, and do not forget your passport on the day of your visit. If you are not staying in Kyoto for very long, I recommend checking out the Silver Pavilion instead. But if you have the time, do not hesitate, the place is stunning and the tea room is really pleasant.
