Its bright red lattice structure forms the shape of an elongated Japanese tsuzumi drum, visible from far across the waterfront. This distinct design earned it the popular nickname of the "iron tower beauty" in Japan.

Rising 354 feet above Meriken Park, it dominates the port of Kobe from within the Chuo-ku ward like a landmark you spot before you even arrive.

Why visit the Kobe Port Tower

The tower was built in 1963 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the port opening. Its tubular lattice construction, unprecedented for this type of shape, was a world first from a technical standpoint.

Closed for renovations from late September 2021 to late April 2024, it reopened with a new glass rooftop terrace that completely changes the visitor experience.

What you discover on the way up

The elevator leads to the observation floors, and a set of stairs then leads to the open-air rooftop terrace. From there, the view opens up 360 degrees over Kobe and its harbor, and on a clear day as far as Osaka, Awaji Island, or the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge.

A section of the upper gallery features a glass floor, dropping a view straight down beneath your feet from about 246 feet in the air. A dizzying thrill is guaranteed for anyone who lingers there.

A rotating café bar makes a full revolution in about 30 minutes, letting the scenery drift slowly by while you sit at your table. An exhibition gallery and a small museum dedicated to the tower's lighting effects round out the visit before browsing the souvenir shops on the lower floors.

Friendly tip: the rooftop terrace is only accessible by stairs, making it inaccessible for visitors with reduced mobility. Also check the weather before heading up, since this part of the visit is entirely outdoors.
