Visiting the Centre Pompidou-Metz
A hub for contemporary art
Opened in 2010, the Centre Pompidou-Metz serves as a satellite location for the famous Paris museum. Located just minutes from the Metz train station, the building is defined by its bold architecture and has established itself as a primary destination for contemporary art fans.
Spectacular architecture
You will recognize the Centre Pompidou-Metz immediately by its distinctive roof, which resembles a Chinese hat and was designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. The structure, built with wood and fabric, creates a sharp contrast against the surrounding neighborhood. Inside, the vast and bright galleries provide an ideal setting for large-scale exhibitions.
Diverse and innovative exhibits
The museum does not maintain a permanent collection. Instead, it hosts temporary exhibitions drawn from the extensive holdings of the Centre Pompidou de Paris. The themes are often experimental and explore various facets of modern and contemporary art. Whether you encounter painting, sculpture, photography, or immersive installations, each visit offers a different experience tailored to a wide audience.
A lively and accessible space
Beyond the galleries, the Centre Pompidou-Metz hosts lectures, children's workshops, and film screenings. These programs make the space feel active and participatory. The museum is easy to reach and offers reduced rates for students and families, helping make contemporary art accessible. The on-site restaurant provides a pleasant view and serves as a good spot for a meal after your visit.

Located right behind the train station, the Centre Pompidou-Metz doesn't have much in common with its Parisian older sibling. Its unique architecture is worth a look, even if you aren't a fan of contemporary art. From the third floor, the museum offers a pretty view of the city. On the other hand, the collections and especially the temporary exhibits on display didn't really excite me. It is better to check them out in advance. I found the place interesting to see, but I didn't stay very long. I would recommend the Musee de la Cour d'Or instead if you are short on time.
