What to see at Place de la Comédie in Metz

Place de la Comédie, located in the historic heart of Metz, is a site defined by its heritage and character. Bordered by the Moselle River and framed by notable architecture, it serves as a stop for travelers exploring the city at their own pace.

A unique historic setting

Developed in the 18th century, Place de la Comédie stands as one of the oldest squares in Metz. Its classical architecture is defined by the théâtre municipal (municipal theater), recognized as one of the oldest active theaters in France. Inaugurated in 1752, the building reflects the architectural refinement of the era and provides a grand backdrop, especially when illuminated after dark.

Walking and relaxing by the Moselle

Given its immediate proximity to the river, Place de la Comédie serves as an entry point for walking along the quays. The quiet surroundings and views of the historic bridges of Metz make for a pleasant experience. You can also visit the île du Petit-Saulcy (Petit-Saulcy Island), a green space that provides a contrast to the surrounding stone structures.

A local cultural scene

The théâtre de la Comédie, situated directly on the square, maintains a schedule throughout the year featuring plays, concerts, and contemporary performances. For those interested in the local arts scene, it provides an opportunity to see shows in a historic venue. During the summer, outdoor events like concerts and film screenings regularly take place on the square.

A square to rediscover through the seasons

A very pleasant square that you shouldn't miss when visiting Metz. Bordered by the Moselle, it creates a lovely architectural ensemble with the Opera House, the Intendance building, and, on the other side, the Temple Neuf. What I love most is how it changes with the seasons. In the winter, you can find a small Christmas market with hot drinks. In the summer, the space turns into a garden with a beautiful fountain. However, the square remains less lively than the area around the cathedral.

A must-see when visiting Metz

The Place de la Comédie is, in my opinion, the most beautiful square in Metz. It is home to some very beautiful historical monuments, including the opera house which has a very good restaurant attached to it. In the summer, a pop-up garden is set up there. The square also offers a superb view of the Cathedral.
