Water Mirror at a Glance
A true icon of Belle Endormie, the Water Mirror sits right across from the stunning Place de la Bourse, between Quais de la Douane and Louis XVIII. Built in 2006 by Michel Corajoud, the urban planner behind the renovation of the 4.5 km of quais de la Garonne, this 3,450 square meter installation and its 800-cubic-meter underground reservoir represent an architectural and artistic feat inspired by Saint Mark's Square in Venice.
Formed by vast granite slabs covered by just 2 cm of water, an ingenious system of solenoid valves manages and recycles the water without waste. 900 nozzles embedded directly in the ground produce the mist effect, while the water slips up through the joints to create the signature mirror effect. Subsurface pumps suck the water back down before it drains and feeds back into the misting circuit. The basin fills up in 3 minutes, and the water is drained every quarter of an hour.
Swinging between a misty fog effect and crisp reflections of classical French architecture, visitors and locals of all ages have made the space their own. People pose for photos, share kisses, and dance on the wet stone. On hot summer afternoons, kids and adults alike wade through the shallow water to cool off or just splash around. Serving as an open-air lounge and a spot for quiet contemplation, the project helped Bordeaux rank 4th worldwide among public squares with remarkable urban design.
After sunset, once the Place de la Bourse lights up, the Water Mirror delivers a postcard-perfect scene, adding a romantic and atmospheric touch to the entire waterfront.
Right across from the Place de la Bourse, this water mirror offers some nice photos with the reflection of the buildings. During a heatwave, it becomes a real haven of rest. I took the opportunity to take a break while visiting the docks. With my feet in the water and the misting sprays, I cooled off nicely. It is very pleasant, even if the place is often hectic with the kids playing. Not to be missed.
