Place de la Bourse at a glance
The iconic centerpiece of the city often called the Sleeping Beauty, Place de la Bourse sits right next to the stunning Water Mirror. It is a mandatory stop for any visitor and a favorite local hangout. Located along the Garonne River in the city center, this 5,000 square meter monumental complex is striking. Victor Hugo once compared it to half of the Place Vendome set upon the water.
Constructed in the 18th century as the showcase for a modern, prosperous city, this was the first open square in Europe to be built along the Quais. Its architecture is quintessentially French, featuring two levels, tall arcades, and wide, richly decorated flat pillars. Built under the supervision of intendants Bouchet and Tourny, the architects Jacques and Ange-Jacques Gabriel used the symmetry of the Palais de la Bourse and the Hotel des Douanes to create a sense of visual harmony and elegance. Today, these two buildings still serve their original functions, housing the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, regional administrative offices, and the National Customs Museum.
The square has changed names several times throughout history. It began as a royal square featuring an equestrian statue of King Louis XV, became the Place de la Liberte during the French Revolution, and was known as the Imperial Square under Napoleon. The original royal statue was melted down to make cannons and was eventually replaced by the elegant Three Graces fountain in marble and bronze by Alphonse Gumery.
As part of a major urban redevelopment project that included the installation of a new tram line, Place de la Bourse was successfully renovated in 2004. Carefully chosen street lamps, which complement the surrounding architecture, add a cozy and romantic atmosphere once the sun goes down.
The symbol of Bordeaux architecture! With its arcades and columns, it reminded me a bit of the Place Vendome. I love going there at night to admire the lights on the buildings and the beautiful Three Graces fountain. During the day, the square is always very busy, especially near the reflecting pool if it is hot out. Between the Garonne River and city hall, it offers the most beautiful view in Bordeaux. A must-see.
