Bordeaux Waterfront at a glance
Located on the left bank of the Garonne in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine regional capital, the Bordeaux Waterfront was beautifully revitalized in the 2000s. It now features wide pedestrian and bike paths stretching nearly 3 miles between the Gare Saint-Jean train station and the Bassins à flot (wet docks). Commissioned by Mayor Alain Juppé and designed by landscape architect Michel Corajoud to coincide with the launch of the tramway, the area gives locals plenty of spots to unwind. You can picnic or lounge on the lawns, cool off at the reflecting pool, walk, bike, or rollerblade, and shop at the Quai des Marques center, which houses about 30 shops and 15 restaurants. You can also play Basque pelota, beach volleyball, or basketball near the Pont de Pierre (Stone Bridge). Whether you want to wander, relax, or get active, this is the favorite promenade for locals and an excellent way to see the city before heading into the narrow streets of the historic center.
The highlight of the visit is the reflecting pool, or miroir d'eau, located across from the Palais de la Bourse (Stock Exchange Palace). A classic image of the Belle Endormie (Sleeping Beauty), the reflection of the stunning 18th-century facades, which are recognized as Unesco World Heritage sites, is impressive. Note that the reflecting pool only operates from May to October. It is a family-friendly spot where kids love to play in the water mists, and it is equally romantic, drawing couples who come to take photos. It is a signature location in Bordeaux.
If you are in the area in June, do not miss the river festival. Held every other year, alternating with the wine festival, the event features highlights like the departure of a frigate or the arrival of notable ships, along with stalls set up along the waterfront, fireworks, exhibits, and concerts.
My favorite walk in Bordeaux. The environment is pretty quiet and it is very well laid out. I walked for 3 hours along both banks, between the Pont de Pierre and the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas.
The waterfront has many points of interest and lets you discover Bordeaux along the water, including the Miroir d'Eau, the Porte de Bourgogne, the hangars, and the Cité du Vin. A must-do.
