Plage de Camilo à Lagos

Visiting Camilo Beach

Camilo Beach is a small cove located in the Algarve near Lagos. It is widely considered one of the most scenic spots in the region. Tucked between ochre-colored cliffs characteristic of this stretch of the southern coast of Portugal, the beach features fine, golden sand. A massive rock formation splits the beach into two sections, connected by a small tunnel hand-carved directly through the stone. To reach the sand, you must descend a monumental wooden staircase consisting of roughly 200 steps.

One of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal

Camilo Beach is a small pocket of sand surrounded by cliffs and washed by calm, turquoise waters. Lifeguards are on duty during the season, but the beach lacks facilities. You will not find showers, restrooms, or changing rooms here. There is no café on the sand, though a restaurant sits atop the cliffs and shares its name with the beach. Be aware that at high tide, the available space on the sand shrinks significantly. While here, you can go snorkeling to explore the marine life and get a closer look at the rock formations that frame the bay.

The fascinating rock formations of the Algarve

The beach itself is flanked by curious rock formations sculpted by the sea, including arches and sea stacks that are visually striking. Furthermore, near Camilo Beach lies Ponta da Piedade, an impressive rock formation reaching 45 meters in height. The cliff, intersected by numerous inlets, is carved into various shapes by the ocean and features many sea caves that can be explored by boat.

Pretty but way too crowded

Pretty location with ocher-colored rocks carved into artistic shapes by the waves. The downside is that there is ultimately very little space to set up, especially at high tide, and way too many people. Being stuck on top of each other ruins the fun a bit.
