The Aquarium of Quebec, between the river and northern landscapes
Perched on the heights of Sainte-Foy, offering a clear view of the Saint Lawrence River, the Aquarium of Quebec is more than just a collection of tanks. It is an immersion into the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of the Great North, designed for both families and serious nature enthusiasts.
Why visit the Aquarium of Quebec?
Managed by the Sépaq (Société des établissements de plein air du Québec, or Quebec Outdoor Establishments Society), the site spans several hectares and combines an indoor aquarium with a vast outdoor park. While it is not the largest aquarium in North America, its focus is distinct, highlighting the aquatic and semi-aquatic fauna of cold regions, with a particular emphasis on species from Quebec and the Arctic.
You will encounter walruses, harbor and harp seals, polar bears, and river otters. The outdoor enclosures allow you to observe these animals from surprisingly close quarters, especially during scheduled feeding times.
What makes this place special
The indoor aquarium features hundreds of marine and freshwater species, ranging from sharks to local fish found in the Saint Lawrence. However, it is often the outdoor park that leaves the strongest impression on visitors. The enclosures are spacious and well integrated into the natural landscape, and the walking path along the river provides a rare setting.
In winter, the site transforms completely. The outdoor ice rink and seasonal activities make it a destination in its own right rather than just a warm-weather attraction. Some visitors return specifically in January to see the walruses and polar bears in their element.
Insider tip: The feeding sessions for the seals and walruses are the most active parts of the visit. Check the schedule posted at the entrance as soon as you arrive and plan your route accordingly. These sessions only last a few minutes and tend to draw a crowd.

How long for this activity
Plan on a half day, or about 3 to 4 hours, to explore all the pavilions and catch the daily presentations without feeling rushed.
I really enjoyed my visit to this aquarium, which is actually very large. I spent about three hours there. There is a great variety of fish and species, both freshwater and saltwater. There are even seals. The aquarium was recently renovated, so the facilities are modern. The visit is perfect with kids.
