The local favorite lookout
Nine minutes. That is all the time the Fløibanen, a historic funicular railway opened in 1918, needs to whisk passengers from the heart of Bergen to the summit of Mount Floyen, sitting at an elevation of 320 meters. Once at the top, the Hanseatic city suddenly unfolds between the fjords, revealing its colorful rooftops and a harbor framed by seven hills.
Why head up to Mount Floyen?
Mount Floyen is not the tallest of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen, but it is the most accessible and the most popular. For over a century, it has served as a Sunday stroll for locals and the primary vantage point for visitors arriving in the city.
The panorama overlooking Bryggen, the old Hanseatic quarter and a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with the islands dotting the surrounding fjord, makes the trip worthwhile on its own. On a clear day, your view extends far beyond the harbor to the neighboring peaks.
What to do at the top
The summit is more than just a photo op. You will find an extensive network of marked trails winding through the forest, between lakes and clearings, with varying levels of difficulty. Some paths lead in half an hour to quieter viewpoints, far from the crowds at the main summit.
A children's playground, a troll-themed trail, and several cafes and restaurants round out the experience. In winter, when the snow settles, a small sledding run draws families.

Local tip: to avoid the crowds, head up early in the morning or try hiking one of the trails from the city center. Expect about an hour of effort, which is well rewarded by the trip back down in the funicular, as the descent is included in your ticket.
When to go?
Sunset is the most popular time to visit, especially in summer when the Nordic white nights keep the light lingering late. However, early morning offers a calmer atmosphere, often with low-angled light that carves out the relief of the islands.

Opening hours
The Fløibanen Funicular, which takes you to the top of Mount Floyen, runs every day of the year.
Mon-Fri: 7:30 AM to 11:00 PM.
Sat-Sun: 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
Departures generally occur every 15 minutes, with more frequent service during peak hours. The summit itself is always accessible to hikers, regardless of the funicular schedule.
How long for this activity
Plan on 2 to 3 hours to take in the views and explore the immediate forest trails. Budget a full half day if you decide to hike back down to the city center.

If you are visiting Bergen, I recommend heading up to Mount Floyen. It offers a superb panorama of the surrounding area. You can also go on some beautiful hikes in the middle of nature, no matter your fitness level. I highly suggest you go there at least for the view.
