Visiting Strasbourg Cathedral
A Gothic architectural masterpiece
Strasbourg Cathedral, with its iconic silhouette rising above the Grande Île (Main Island), serves as the definitive symbol of this city in France. Founded in the 11th century on the remains of a previous structure, it held the title of the tallest building in the world for over two centuries, thanks to its 142-meter (466-foot) spire. This architectural feat required over 15 master builders who worked on the project for more than three centuries. Constructed in a flamboyant Gothic style using signature pink sandstone, the cathedral moved Victor Hugo to describe it as a prodigy of the gigantic and the delicate.
A richly decorated exterior
Take time to study the western facade, which is easily identifiable by its intricate rosace (rose window) and the galerie des apôtres (gallery of the apostles), featuring some 20 statues. The vertical reach above the main portal tympanum is striking. Look for the stork statue tucked in a corner, a nod to the bird that serves as the regional emblem. The beffroi (belfry) filling the space between the two towers was not added until the 14th century. At that time, the cathedral bore a strong resemblance to its counterpart in Paris. Its spire, which once represented a power struggle between the local bishop and the city government, was among the first in the region to incorporate a lightning rod system.
The interior highlights
Head down into the crypte (crypt) to see the Romanesque architecture, which represents the oldest part of the building. Directly above, the Byzantine-inspired choir holds the altar. The central stained-glass window depicts the Vierge (Virgin Mary), to whom the cathedral is dedicated. Visitors have observed a curious phenomenon since 1974: during each equinox, a specific reflection through the stained glass illuminates the Christ figure on the pulpit in a shade of green.
Every day at noon (excluding Sundays and holidays), you can watch a video presentation detailing the astronomical clock and the parade of the apostles. If you have the energy, climb the 332 steps to the viewing platform. From 66 meters (217 feet) up, you get a clear view of the city center and the surrounding plains.
