Visiting Strasbourg Cathedral

A Gothic architectural masterpiece

Strasbourg Cathedral, with its iconic silhouette rising above the Grande Île (Main Island), serves as the definitive symbol of this city in France. Founded in the 11th century on the remains of a previous structure, it held the title of the tallest building in the world for over two centuries, thanks to its 142-meter (466-foot) spire. This architectural feat required over 15 master builders who worked on the project for more than three centuries. Constructed in a flamboyant Gothic style using signature pink sandstone, the cathedral moved Victor Hugo to describe it as a prodigy of the gigantic and the delicate.

A richly decorated exterior

Take time to study the western facade, which is easily identifiable by its intricate rosace (rose window) and the galerie des apôtres (gallery of the apostles), featuring some 20 statues. The vertical reach above the main portal tympanum is striking. Look for the stork statue tucked in a corner, a nod to the bird that serves as the regional emblem. The beffroi (belfry) filling the space between the two towers was not added until the 14th century. At that time, the cathedral bore a strong resemblance to its counterpart in Paris. Its spire, which once represented a power struggle between the local bishop and the city government, was among the first in the region to incorporate a lightning rod system.

The interior highlights

Head down into the crypte (crypt) to see the Romanesque architecture, which represents the oldest part of the building. Directly above, the Byzantine-inspired choir holds the altar. The central stained-glass window depicts the Vierge (Virgin Mary), to whom the cathedral is dedicated. Visitors have observed a curious phenomenon since 1974: during each equinox, a specific reflection through the stained glass illuminates the Christ figure on the pulpit in a shade of green.

Every day at noon (excluding Sundays and holidays), you can watch a video presentation detailing the astronomical clock and the parade of the apostles. If you have the energy, climb the 332 steps to the viewing platform. From 66 meters (217 feet) up, you get a clear view of the city center and the surrounding plains.

Massive yet delicate

This cathedral, dressed in pink, is immense and very beautiful. I love spending some time admiring this sublime facade with its countless figures. You could easily spend hours here. The interior is just as impressive. Taking photos of the many stained glass windows on a sunny day is very enjoyable. I was lucky enough once to hear the organ play, and it was spellbinding. The astronomical clock is a must-see inside the cathedral. The most courageous can climb the 330 steps that lead to the cathedral platform, and the view over Strasbourg is splendid on a clear day. The only negative point for me, as is often the case in touristy places of worship, is the noise visitors make, sometimes forgetting where they are!

A total "wow" effect!

The facade of the Strasbourg Cathedral is stunning, with really fine details. You could spend hours looking at it, but it would be a shame to miss the inside. The stained glass windows and the astronomical clock are also absolute must-sees. The square where the building is located is also very pretty.

A must-see day or night

The Strasbourg Cathedral is a must see!
First for its size, which makes it the most imposing building in the city, and then for its architectural richness.
The facade alone, adorned with numerous statues of apostles, is worth the trip.
The interior is also impressive, with its stained glass windows and its organ.
I recommend walking around the center at night to admire the cathedral illuminated.

So tall

I was very impressed both times I saw the Strasbourg Cathedral by its height and its detail. It is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Its astronomical clock is just as fascinating as its colorful stained glass windows. At night, during the Christmas market for example, it is even more beautiful for feeling its full majesty. Speaking of which, you will find stalls all around it, which are a bit more expensive by the way than in other parts of the city.

A gothic masterpiece

The symbol of Strasbourg, an absolute must-see! The asymmetrical silhouette of the monument really surprised me. I took the time to admire the countless statues, which are remarkably precise, covering the facade. Every time I walk by, I notice new details. Inside, the stained glass windows are prodigious. Don't miss the astronomical clock, a real curiosity whose technology always fascinates me.

Also unmissable is the climb to the cathedral platform. More than three hundred steps. It is a workout, but the magnificent view of the city and the spire make the effort worth it.

Very impressive

The Strasbourg Cathedral is truly very impressive. It dominates the square with all its height. It is actually impossible to appreciate it in its entirety unless you step back a little bit. The visit inside is also pretty interesting. I recommend taking a guided tour to learn more about this structure and its missing spire.

The children's well

Legend has it that the Strasbourg Cathedral is home to a very ancient sacred well, the "well of children," belonging to Celtic and Germanic peoples. It supposedly leads to an underground lake where the souls of unborn children reside. Tradition held that parents wanting a baby would make a wish at the fish fountain in Strasbourg. The request was then transmitted through the waters to a white-bearded gnome dressed in red, traveling in a small boat. Armed with a golden net, he would catch and entrust the chosen one to a stork, with the mission to bring it and place it in the future mother’s womb. The stork is an iconic animal of the region, but also the bird of the goddess Holda, a Nordic deity with many attributes such as hearth, winter, and creativity, who weaves destinies and presides over births. She is very present around fountains in Germany and Alsace, where she is accustomed to bathing.

The well of children was sealed in 1766 and the fish fountain, or Fischbrunnen, which was located in Gutenberg Square, was destroyed in 1843. But you can still visit these spots to make a wish, and who knows, a miracle might happen.

Beautiful Gothic cathedral

You can't miss the cathedral! Seriously, even from the train station or the highway, its very tall spire towers over the other buildings (fun fact, on clear days, you can actually see it when hiking in the Vosges).

Inside, some beautiful stained glass windows are waiting for you, along with a few fun stories.

The surrounding area is also very beautiful, whether it is the walk along the quays or the medieval alleys behind the cathedral, on the other side of the cathedral from the Place du Château.

During the Christmas season, there are light shows at night on the facade. The ones in 2017 were magnificent, so don't hesitate to go check them out.

It has a better profile than the other one

The first time you see the Strasbourg Cathedral head on, you are intrigued by its asymmetrical look.

"It's missing a second spire at the top," you tell yourself.

But eventually, you get used to it, and it gives the place some character. Especially since that single spire really goes up high.

Inside, there are some beautiful stained-glass windows to see.
