Visiting Central Park
Located in the borough of Manhattan, Central Park stretches over 840 acres and serves as the primary green lungs of New York. With more than 37 million visitors each year, it remains the most popular park in the United States.
History
Designed in the mid-19th century to provide New Yorkers with a connection to nature, the park required 10 million cartloads of soil and rock to build. Workers planted 500,000 trees at a cost of 500 million USD. The original design featured three distinct styles: a pastoral section echoing English meadows, a picturesque area, and a formal space incorporating a fountain and gathering grounds. Central Park quickly became a favorite spot for public promenades. In 1864, it opened a zoo, the oldest in the country, and a few years later, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) was established within its borders. The rise of the automobile caused the park to decline, and it was not until the New Deal era that new sports facilities restored its vitality. The 1970s brought a wave of massive protests and concerts to the grounds before concerned residents pressured the mayor to establish the Central Park Conservancy in 1980.
Diverse landscapes and atmospheres
Today, Central Park is defined by several distinct landmarks. The Great Lawn is a massive central meadow, perfect for lounging and spotting squirrels. The largest body of water is the Reservoir, named after Jacqueline Kennedy, which is circled by a 1.5-mile jogging track. To the south, the man-made The Lake offers rowboat rentals in the summer and transforms into an ice rink during the winter. Do not miss the Scottish-style Belvedere Castle, the Bethesda Fountain, or the Strawberry Fields memorial dedicated to John Lennon. Renting bicycles on-site is the most efficient way to cover all this ground.
Numerous free tours and events are organized throughout the year, so check the park website for schedules. Be aware that smoking in the park carries a 50 USD fine.

I was shocked by the size of this park, which is truly immense. You can do so many activities there, whether it is running, biking, or even catching a show. I felt like I was in a movie. For once, reality lives up to what I imagined.
