Visiting the National Archaeological Museum

If there is one cultural site you cannot skip in Naples, it is the National Archaeological Museum. Spanning 12,650 square meters of exhibition space, it ranks among the most significant museums in Italy and the world. While the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum provided the foundation for its collections, the museum has since expanded to include treasures from ancient Egypt, Roman antiquity, and an impressive numismatic archive. You will find this site inside the Palazzo degli Studi (Palace of Studies), a massive structure built in the late 16th century, which makes this journey through time feel substantial and grounded.

Encountering Buried Worlds

We owe the initial excavations of the Roman cities buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD to Charles III of Bourbon. Ferdinand IV later contributed the Farnese collection, one of the most famous assemblages of Roman antiquities, which serves as the anchor for your visit. The museum is spread across four levels. The ground floor focuses on statues from Campania, as well as the sculptures, precious stones, and jewels of the Farnese family. From second-century BC cameos to Renaissance gems, the craftsmanship is remarkable. On the first floor, the mosaics from archaeological sites and frescoes from private homes are incredibly vivid. You can see furniture from the House of the Faun in Pompeii and the famous mosaic depicting the battle between Darius and Alexander. This floor also houses the Secret Cabinet with its collection of erotic artifacts. The second floor is the largest. At its center, the sundial room separates the sections, which include metals, ivory, glassware, the Villa of the Papyri, the Temple of Isis, bronze statues, a scale model of Pompeii, and various household objects. A few hours barely scratch the surface. In the basement, the Egyptian collection and its artifacts round out a visit that is both sobering and elevated.

Stunning collections in a beautiful setting

In the historic heart of Naples, housed in a magnificent palace, this museum is my favorite in the city.

You will find many objects from Greco-Roman antiquity here, with explanations about the ways of life back then. I found it very informative. Many things that we think are recent already existed at the time!
