Sforza Castle, fortress and museum in the heart of Milan
Red brick ramparts stretching for nearly a kilometer, a central tower reconstructed exactly after an explosion, and behind these thick walls, one of the richest collections of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo preserved in Italy.
The Sforza Castle does not look like any other Milanese landmark. Outside, it projects a massive defensive presence, but inside, it hides treasures you would not expect behind such imposing fortifications.
Why visit Sforza Castle?
Built starting in 1358 by Galeazzo II Visconti, the castle became the residence of the Sforza family in the 15th century, before enduring French, Spanish, and Austrian occupations. Used as a barracks for a long time, it barely escaped total destruction in the 19th century thanks to the architect Luca Beltrami, who restored it and gave it its current appearance.
Today, the castle houses several civic museums that make it one of the most dense cultural sites in Milan, just steps from Parc Sempione.
The Ducal Court and the Filarete Tower
Entry is through the imposing Torre del Filarete (Filarete Tower), a 1905 reconstruction of the original tower destroyed in 1521. Once inside, the Corte Ducale (Ducal Court) reveals a completely different side: elegant arcades, ornate facades, and a Renaissance court atmosphere far from the military austerity of the outer ramparts.
This is where the two faces of the castle stand out: the defensive power intended by the Visconti, and the courtly refinement later infused by the Sforza.
Major works not to miss
The Pinacoteca del Castello (Castle Pinacoteca) preserves paintings by Mantegna, Bellini, and Titian. However, the most intense piece remains the Pietà Rondanini, the final unfinished work of Michelangelo, sculpted until just days before his death in 1564. Displayed in a dark, stripped-back room, it commands an almost physical silence.
On the ceiling of the Sala delle Asse (Room of the Wooden Boards), an interlacing of painted branches and foliage, long attributed in part to Leonardo da Vinci, is worth a long look.
Insider tip: Arrive in the late morning on a weekday to avoid school groups, and set aside at least one hour for the Pietà Rondanini room alone, which is often rushed through by hurried visitors.
