Visiting the Palacio de López

The Palacio de López, also known as the presidential palace, is a grand building that houses the office of the president of Paraguay. It stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in the capital city of Asunción.

History

In the first half of the 19th century, Francisco Solano López, then the Minister of War for Paraguay, returned from a tour of Europe. After experiencing the lavish palaces there, he decided his own country needed an equivalent symbol of power. To modernize the nation, Francisco brought back several architects and engineers, tasking them with competing for the design of this new palace. The project was awarded to a Hungarian engineer named Francisco Wisner and an English architect named Alonso Taylor.

Construction began in 1857 and spanned nearly a decade. European artists and craftsmen were hired to furnish and decorate the interior. However, as the country was embroiled in war, the man who commissioned the building never lived there for a single day.

By 1894, after the building had fallen into a state of neglect, President Juan Gualberto González initiated renovations. These works lasted two years. Ultimately, he was deposed in a coup and was also unable to reside in the palace. It would take two more presidencies before Juan Bautista Egusquiza finally established it as the official residence of the president of Paraguay.

The Palacio de López

Decorated by artists from across Europe, the building features an opulent interior. A grand marble staircase, ceilings adorned with floral paintings, and oversized mirrors in custom-carved frames define the space. The furniture, bronze fixtures, and paintings that complete the decor were sourced almost entirely from Paris.

The palace is undoubtedly one of the crown jewels of Paraguay, though unfortunately, visitors are limited to viewing the exterior.

Heads up!

The palace is certainly very beautiful, but watch out, the national guard is heavily armed and doesn't let anyone get close. I remember that their weapons were out whenever drivers pulled over to the side of the road to take photos. It was the same for me while I was walking on Avenida Flores. Still, the palace is very beautiful.
