Frida Kahlo Museum, an immersion into the artist's life

The childhood home of Frida Kahlo

Located in the charming neighborhood of Coyoacán, the Frida Kahlo Museum, also known as the Casa Azul (Blue House), is a priority for art and history enthusiasts in Mexico City. The home where the artist was born and raised has been transformed into a museum, providing an intimate look at the life of one of the most influential figures in Mexican art.

What you will see

Inside, you can explore the rooms of the house, which have been preserved as they were during the lives of Frida Kahlo and her husband, the famous muralist Diego Rivera. The collection features original works by Kahlo, photographs, and her personal effects, including her traditional clothing and art supplies. The lush gardens are also a highlight, offering a quiet atmosphere where you can picture Frida at work.

A dive into Mexican culture

The museum provides context for Frida Kahlo's journey, her political activism, and her personal struggles with illness and physical pain, all of which permeate her work. The visit also offers a perspective on Mexican culture through folk art objects and references to the indigenous roots that were central to the artist.

Charming place, but nothing special

A nice museum to visit, especially for the setting and the colors of the house. The collection remains limited, focusing more on Frida's life than on her art. The garden is very beautiful with pretty plants. A small downside: a pass is sold at the entrance if you want to take photos or videos. It is an interesting outing but not essential if you are not all that interested in the artist.

A bit disappointed by Frida's house...

After waiting an hour in line to enter the famous blue house, you go through the main rooms where Frida's furniture is on display. You can see her painting studio, among other things. You can also walk around the patio, which has a few archaeological pieces. It is a shame that almost none of the artist's paintings are on display! However, you can see an exhibit of the traditional clothing she wore and used as inspiration for her self-portraits.
