Visiting Chapultepec Castle
Among the standout landmarks in Mexico City, Chapultepec Castle is a must. This structure dates back to 1735 and served many different purposes before becoming the current National Museum of History.
Its History
Chapultepec Castle was built at the start of the 18th century on the Colline del Chapulín (Grasshopper Hill). This site was not chosen by accident. It is the most visible high point from Mexico City and was a sacred location for the Aztecs. This prestigious position, both near the city center and removed from the noise, made it a preferred retreat for the country's leaders. After independence, Chapultepec Castle was turned into a military college and was the site of a fierce battle between American and Mexican forces in the mid-19th century. After serving as the region's first astronomical observatory, it was selected in 1864 by Emperor Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, to serve as their imperial residence. The castle was later favored by various heads of state and their foreign guests before becoming the National Museum of History in 1939.
What to see at Chapultepec Castle?
The exterior architecture of Chapultepec Castle has remained intact for nearly three centuries, but the interior was gradually modified to resemble grand European palaces. Today, you can view period tapestries and paintings as you walk through lavishly decorated rooms and climb marble staircases. Busts of historical figures accompany you through the halls, serving as a reminder of the site's complex past. Right nearby, in the Bosque de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Woods), you can continue your cultural tour at the National Museum of Anthropology, one of the most significant museums in the Americas.

During my visit to Chapultepec Castle, I was really surprised by the beauty of the place. The views of Mexico City from the balconies are simply breathtaking, and the gardens offer a calm escape in the middle of the urban hustle and bustle. I especially liked the murals and the historical objects, which tell the history of the country with such force and emotion. After the visit, do not hesitate to walk around the surrounding gardens. It is a peaceful and very pleasant moment.
