A freshly renovated budget hotel with shared bathrooms in northeastern Tokyo
The location
Minami-Senju is a residential neighborhood in northeastern Tokyo, far from the frantic pace of the major tourist hubs. The streets around the hotel stay quiet, lined with ordinary apartment buildings and small neighborhood shops, offering an unscripted look at everyday Tokyo life.
Two train stations sit within a ten-minute walk. From Minami-Senju (served by the JR Jōban, Tokyo Metro Hibiya, and Tsukuba Express lines), Asakusa is 2 minutes away and Ueno takes 5 minutes. Senju-Ohashi station (on the Keisei line) provides a direct connection to Narita, making arrivals and departures much smoother.
Rooms and comfort
The rooms are small, sometimes very small, clocking in at just 6 m² for the standard single. It is Tokyo, and they own it. The chambre simple en mezzanine (loft single room) gives you a bit of vertical headroom, but no extra floor space. The semi-double features a 120 cm bed, which works fine for a solo traveler wanting a little extra stretching room. The twin en mezzanine (loft twin room) or separate beds setup fits two budget-conscious travelers.
Every room comes with air conditioning, a TV, a small desk, Wi-Fi, and a wired LAN connection. Bathrooms and the kitchen are shared. The hotel has been renovated, keeping the spaces clean, functional, and no-frills. If you need a solo spot to crash for a few nights while transiting toward Asakusa or Ueno, it gets the job done.
Food and drink
Hotel Meigetsu does not have an on-site restaurant, breakfast service, bar, or communal kitchen. For your morning coffee, the Minami-Senju neighborhood features several 24-hour convenience stores right around the corner, and Asakusa is just a two-minute train ride away for a much wider selection of cafés and dining spots.
Services and extras
The front desk is open from 8:00 AM to 11:30 PM, giving you a solid window for late arrivals without going full 24/7. Check-in runs until 11:30 PM, and check-out is by 10:00 AM.
The property takes a minimalist approach: no on-site restaurant, no spa, and no parking available. Shared facilities like showers and restrooms are well-maintained. Beyond that, the Minami-Senju neighborhood places convenience stores and local eateries just steps away, which easily makes up for the lack of internal services.
Who it suits
This hotel clearly targets travelers looking for a clean, well-located place to stay in Tokyo without paying top dollar. It is not the right choice if you need extra comfort or privacy beyond the bare basics.
The pros
- Budget solo travelers who want a private room rather than a dorm bed
- Quick access to Asakusa, Ueno and Akihabara in just a few minutes by train
- Quiet residential neighborhood away from the tourist crowds
- Ideal for anyone spending their days out and about who only needs a functional bed at night
The cons
- Very compact rooms starting from 6 m², making them a poor fit for long stays or couples
- Shared bathrooms, so skip this place if a private en-suite is a must
- Front desk closes after 23h30, meaning late arrivals require careful planning

Last year I visited Japan and stayed at Hotel Meigetsu in Tokyo. Overall the experience was great, the hotel was clean and tidy, and within walking distance of the monorail station. The staff was friendly and helpful, I had a conversation with the workers every evening. The total experience 9/10 The only thing that I would have different is I'm not a fan of the shared restrooms.
