Ribeauvillé is a medieval town set directly on the Alsace Wine Route. You can explore its colorful streets or hike up to the three castle ruins overlooking the vineyards. Between wine tastings at local estates and walking the historic Grand'Rue, the town offers an authentic look at the region. It is a place to experience local architecture and food firsthand, with scenery that looks just like the postcards.
Split into upper and lower sections at the base of Mont Sainte-Odile, Ottrott stands out in Alsace for producing the only notable red wine on the Route des Vins, a pinot noir perfected by local growers over centuries. You can reach medieval castle ruins via short hiking trails, explore a former royal sword factory turned museum, or book a stay at a local spa. This is a village worth more than just a quick drive through.

The view over the Rhine plain all the way to the horizon of the Black Forest is splendid. Vines surround this typical regional village. Once you have enjoyed a glass of white wine there, Husseren-les-Châteaux is a great starting point for discovering the picturesque Route of the Five Castles. Like many other Alsatian villages, Kaysersberg offers everything you look for when visiting a typical village in Alsace. Colorful timber-framed houses and plenty of souvenir shops and regional products can be discovered all along the main street, the Rue du Général de Gaulle. The Kaysersberg castle, which overlooks the town, makes all the difference for me compared to the other villages. Its silhouette has long been the symbol of the town. Kaysersberg is worth discovering in summer (when it is full of flowers) as well as in winter (with its many Christmas decorations!).

The village of Eguisheim is a must for any visitor to the Haut-Rhin. I especially love wandering along the Rue du Rempart. This narrow street is pedestrian-friendly and circular. You can find plenty of souvenir shops and local specialties there. The colorful houses, filled with flowers in the summer, are typical of Alsace. I always finish up at the center of the village, its square, and the Saint Leon IX chapel. I often take advantage of my time in Eguisheim to buy some gingerbread.

Right next to Riquewihr, along the Alsace Wine Route, Ribeauvillé knows how to charm its visitors. It is not a surprise, the colorful half-timbered houses are everywhere, most of the time housing a shop for wine, souvenirs, or Alsatian specialties. I especially love walking up the Grand Rue to the Ribeauvillé fountain, then heading back down the same way. I once had the courage to hike up to the ruins of the three castles that overlook the town. The walk is a workout, but I did not regret it since I am a lover of old stonework.

I always spend a half day in Riquewihr whenever we are on vacation in Alsace. For me, it is the most charming village in the Haut-Rhin. It brings together everything I look for when I want to enjoy historic stonework. A fortified wall, narrow alleys, colorful half-timbered houses, shops selling local products and souvenirs, an incredible Christmas-themed shop, street performances, concerts, and plenty of restaurants to grab a drink or enjoy a tarte flambée. In summer or winter, the charm of Riquewihr always works on me. Even in peak season, I always find a place to park (paid). Do not miss this charming town if you are wandering the Alsace wine routes.
