Things to do in Izmir: must-see attractions

Visiting Izmir

Bordered by the Aegean Sea, Izmir, also historically known as Smyrna, stands as the third-largest city in Türkiye. It is a modern port metropolis with a distinct charm rooted in its layered history. Founded back in 3000 BCE, the city has been shaped by various civilizations, leaving behind an invaluable collection of archaeological sites. After a massive fire in 1922 destroyed much of the city, it was rebuilt by French urban planners, giving parts of the downtown a Western aesthetic that sits comfortably alongside its deeply ingrained local culture. Dominated by Mount Sipylos, the city sits between the sea and green hills, serving as a gateway to Karagöl National Park.

Historical treasures in the city center

Konak Square serves as the bright focal point of the city. In its center, surrounded by palm trees and a constant flurry of pigeons, the Clock Tower stands as a 25-meter-tall monument. Built in 1901, it is the city's primary landmark. The surrounding neighborhood is essential walking territory. The small, octagonal Yali Mosque, dating to 1748, adds a quiet beauty to the square. One street leads toward the ferry terminal and Konak Pier, a former fish market designed by Eiffel that has since been repurposed as a shopping mall. Another street opens into the pedestrian zone where the high-energy Kemeralti Market defines the local atmosphere. This massive, legendary bazaar is a dense collection of restaurants and shops. It is a sensory mix of colors and scents where the crowds are part of the experience. Ottoman fountains and craft workshops lead toward the Kızlarağası Hani covered market, a stunning building from 1744. At the end of the market, the columns and arcades of the Smyrna Agora rise up. Built by Alexander the Great and later rebuilt after an earthquake, this Greco-Roman open-air museum is still being excavated, and the ancient water channels remain functional today. Further along, the Fatih Cimili Mosque stands out for its blue hues and is considered one of the most beautiful in the city.

A superb coastal stroll

Originally built as a practical solution for navigating the city's steep hills, the Asansör (elevator) has become a historic landmark that is worth the ride. Constructed in 1907, it carries visitors to the top of the Karataş cliffs for a sweeping view. Another iconic spot for people-watching and coastal views is the Kordon promenade, which offers miles of waterfront. Filled with local fishermen and fishmongers, it is a relaxing area packed with restaurants. As a city of grapes, Izmir incorporates them into every dish imaginable, including ice cream. To fully grasp the historical nuances of this city, the Ethnographic Museum houses collections on local art, customs, jewelry, and weaponry. It is an authentic and engaging destination.

When to go

With a Mediterranean climate, Izmir is pleasant from March through November. Summers can be quite hot, similar to the intensity of a Southern California summer. Türkiye is a secular country, and the period of Ramadan does not impact the operation of tourist sites or restaurants in Izmir.

How to get there

Direct flights to Izmir are available from many international hubs. The international airport is located 18 km (about 11 miles) from the city center, with buses, shuttles, and light rail providing easy access. Ferries also connect the city to various points along the Aegean coast.

Region full of things to do

The city of Izmir is a pretty pleasant seaside town, just like many others.
What I really remember it for are all the activities and sights you can visit nearby.
Among them: the Greek ruins of Ephesus, the petrified waterfalls of Pamukkale, and many more!
It lets you do something other than just beach and pool every single day.
