Things to do in Martina Franca: must-see attractions

Visiting Martina Franca, baroque elegance in the heart of Puglia

Located in the Itria Valley, Martina Franca stands out for its deep architectural heritage. This town is less crowded than its neighbors, offering a refined historic center and a quiet pace of life. It is a worthwhile stop for travelers looking to see a more understated side of Puglia.

A historic center of great elegance

The heart of Martina Franca is a maze of whitewashed alleyways. Stunning baroque facades line small, shaded squares. Piazza Roma, home to the Palazzo Ducale, is a solid starting point for a walk.

Do not miss the Basilica of San Martino, a baroque gem with detailed craftsmanship. The surrounding streets reveal other treasures, including wrought iron balconies, carved doorways, and narrow lanes that invite aimless wandering.

A peaceful, local atmosphere

Martina Franca maintains an authentic feel. Locals gather in the late afternoon to chat on cafe terraces. The weekly Wednesday market draws both residents and curious visitors.

In the evenings, the town comes to life with a gentle energy. Small restaurants and cafes operate without ever becoming noisy. It is the ideal place to experience the Puglia art of living in its simplest form.

Events and culture

Every summer, Martina Franca hosts the Festival della Valle d'Itria. This opera event attracts renowned artists. Performances take place in exceptional settings, such as the inner courtyards of baroque palaces.

The rest of the year, exhibitions and shows occasionally animate the town. Nothing overwhelming, just enough to add interest to a quiet stay.

Countryside walks

Around Martina Franca, the countryside offers scenic paths. Olive groves, isolated trulli, and dry-stone walls create a landscape typical of the region.

Cyclists will appreciate the quiet backroads. The beaches of the Adriatic coast, reachable in less than an hour, are perfect for a seaside excursion.

Authentic flavors

The gastronomy of Martina Franca is simple and hearty. Capocollo, a local cured meat, is a highly regarded specialty. It is often served with fresh cheeses and bread baked in wood-fired ovens.

When it comes to wine, look for reds produced from Negroamaro or Primitivo, the signature grape varieties of Puglia.

Where to eat?

  • Osteria del Coco Pazzo (historic center): traditional cuisine with a modern twist in a cozy setting.
  • Ristorante I Templari (Piazza Plebiscito): local specialties with a pleasant outdoor terrace.
  • Gaonas Officine del Gusto (near the Palazzo Ducale): local ingredients prepared with finesse.

Where to stay?

  • Relais Villa San Martino (countryside): elegant property with a pool and spa.
  • Park Hotel San Michele (city center): private garden and a restful atmosphere.
  • Casa Pellegrino Holiday Home (old town): charming accommodation in a prime location.

When to go?

May, June, and September are ideal for enjoying the mild climate and quiet streets. In July, the Festival della Valle d'Itria enlivens the town without being intrusive.

How to get there?

From Bari, by car, expect a drive of about 1 hour and 30 minutes via the highway and secondary roads. Martina Franca is also served by regional trains from Taranto or Lecce.

How to get around?

The city center is easily explored on foot. To explore the surrounding area, it is best to rent a car.

Gorgeous architecture

I recommend spending at least a few hours in the center of Martina Franca. The town has magnificent, perfectly preserved Baroque architecture. Life there is also very lively, especially during the high season. You can grab a drink or do some shopping before continuing your tour of Puglia.
