Visiting Nogent-le-Roi
Nogent-le-Roi is a small town tucked into the Eure river valley in the Centre-Val de Loire region, right along the banks of the Roulebois stream. Long governed by the powerful Coulombs Abbey, which no longer stands today, the town earned its historical weight as a royal stronghold complete with a massive fortress. It is also the birthplace of Joan of France, daughter of King Louis XI, who was beatified in 1743. Today, Nogent-le-Roi holds onto that golden age through its centuries-old church and remarkably well-preserved timber-framed houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.
The Medieval Heritage of Nogent-le-Roi
Right in the heart of the historic center, the Saint-Sulpice church features stained-glass windows officially classified as historic monuments. Back in the 15th century, the church was built directly against the fortified castle as part of the town walls, which have since been torn down, leaving its southern exterior walls notably unfinished. Inside, you will find the relics of Saint Joan of France, born right here in town. The cornerstone of the church was laid by Louis de Brézé in 1494, whose grandfather Pierre de Brézé received the estate directly from King Charles VII.
Beyond its religious architecture, Nogent-le-Roi saw several châteaux rise over the centuries, with the latest one built by Alfred Chapelain at the request of Eugène Mesquite, a 19th-century mayor and senator. The manor has a classic Second Empire architectural style featuring steep French roofs, detailed cornices, and dormer windows. The surrounding parklands were designed by landscape architect Aubray. Today, this green space serves double duty as a recreational park equipped with fitness stations, a golf driving range, tennis courts, and an animal enclosure housing chickens, rabbits, goats, ponies, and a herd of over one hundred fallow deer. Families can also try out the tree-top ropes courses at Lutinopark right on site.
A Charming Commune in the Eure Valley
Nogent-le-Roi boasts a rich architectural heritage featuring numerous watermills dating back to the 15th century. Converted into private residences, these buildings remain a prominent feature of the village alongside the traditional timber-framed houses. The manoir de Vacheresses, a former noble estate, now hosts private events and weddings.
If you prefer spending time outdoors, the local hiking trails wind along the banks of the Eure and through the bois de Ruffin. Less than 10 kilometers away, you can visit the château de Maintenon, a striking estate that once belonged to Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon and secret wife of the Sun King Louis XIV. The formal French gardens were laid out by Le Nôtre, and the stone arches of a monumental Vauban aqueduct still stand nearby. At the time, Louis XIV pursued the ambitious engineering project of diverting the waters of the Eure all the way to Versailles.
When to go
Nogent-le-Roi is best visited during the warmer months between May and September to make the most of the outdoor spaces, as the château itself is closed to the general public.
How to get there
The town sits at the intersection of the D983, D929, D4, and D26 roadways. It is accessible via lines 89 and 8 of the regional Rémi bus network (formerly TransBeauce). The closest regional train stations are located in Maintenon and Épernon.
