Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans sits deep in the high valley of the Vénéon river, hidden within the Isère department of the Alps. Nearly one-fifth of the local territory falls under the protection of the Parc National des Écrins. Established in 1973, it was the first national park in France to receive such a designation, which allowed for early, aggressive conservation efforts to protect local biodiversity. The hamlet of La Bérarde, located nearby, serves as the primary base camp for many of these ascents. In 1877, Pierre Gaspard became the first to summit the Meije, climbing alongside his son and his student, Emmanuel Boileau de Castelnau.
Back in the village, the Musée Mémoires d’Alpinismes details the history of the sport and its most famous practitioners. You will also find a local cemetery where many legendary mountaineers are laid to rest, some marked by gravestones adorned with ice axes.

During the summer, the T77 line extends all the way to Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans, but during the off-season, you will need to arrange a taxi for the final leg of the trip.
