Exploring Dinant, a quiet gem on the banks of the Meuse

Tucked away in the heart of Wallonia, Dinant makes for a scenic and peaceful getaway for travelers looking to experience a different side of Belgium. Built right against towering cliffs and split by the Meuse River, this human-scale city blends natural drama with historic roots and local traditions.

A dramatic natural setting

The first thing that hits you upon arriving in Dinant is how the city wedges itself between sheer rock faces and the water. The view is especially striking from the Charles de Gaulle Bridge, which is lined with colorful saxophones honoring Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the instrument who was born right here. Look up and you will spot the Dinant Citadel, perched 100 meters above the river. You can reach the top via cable car or by tackling a steep staircase for sweeping views of the valley.

A history shaped by music and conflict

Beyond the fortress, the downtown area features the Notre-Dame Collegiate Church, instantly recognizable by its unusual bulbous bell tower. Inside, stained glass windows cast a soft light across the dark stone walls.

History buffs can tour the Citadel Museum to learn about the region's turbulent past, particularly during the World Wars. Dinant also celebrates its most famous son at the Adolphe Sax House, a small exhibition space dedicated to his life and invention.

Getting out on the water

Life in Dinant revolves around the Meuse River. River cruises offer a different perspective of the valley, while the paved walkways along the banks invite leisurely strolls. During summer, you can rent a kayak to paddle down the river through green countryside. If you prefer hiking, the Furfooz Park sits just a few miles outside the center, offering a walking loop that weaves through nature reserves, caves, and Roman ruins.

A lively small-town vibe

Despite its modest size, Dinant stays active. On Saturday mornings, a small market sets up along the quays. Events fill the calendar throughout the year, including a jazz festival and concerts held inside the citadel. Sidewalk cafes serve local beers and hearty regional plates at reasonable prices, keeping the atmosphere relaxed and far removed from major tourist crowds.

Rooted, traditional food

The signature local specialty here is the couque de Dinant, an extremely hard honey-and-flour biscuit pressed into intricately carved wooden molds. It is more of a decorative curiosity than a soft snack. For actual meals, expect classic Belgian fare like Flemish carbonnade or rabbit cooked in beer, almost always served with fries. Local brews like Leffe, originally crafted at the nearby abbey, are a must-try with dinner.

Where to eat?

  • La Table d'Antonio (downtown): Traditional Belgian cooking in a refined setting with solid value.
  • Chez Bouboule (Meuse quays): Casual spot right on the water serving classic dishes like mussels and fries.
  • L'Esplanade Gourmande (Citadel district): Set slightly back from the main drag, offering great views and well-executed local ingredients.

Where to stay?

  • ibis Dinant Centre (Meuse quays): Convenient and comfortable rooms with direct river views.
  • Les Jardins de la Molignée (Anhée, 10 min away): A quiet hotel featuring a pool and gardens.
  • La Merveilleuse (near center): Atmospheric rooms set inside a former convent with views of the citadel.

When to go?

May through September brings the best weather for outdoor activities and river cruises. Autumn also brings striking foliage colors to the surrounding hillsides.

How to get there?

From Brussels, the train takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes with a quick transfer in Namur. Driving from the capital takes roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes. One-way train tickets start around $12* depending on the departure time.

How to get around

Downtown Dinant is compact and easily explored on foot. If you want to head out into the surrounding Meuse valley or visit nearby cave systems, having a car makes things much easier.

Charming but very touristy

Walking along the Meuse River from the French/Belgian border is really pleasant. This stroll becomes even better when you arrive in Dinant. There is something for the whole family, or almost (maybe not for the youngest ones). The Leffe beer, the Gothic Notre-Dame de Dinant collegiate church, the house of Monsieur Sax... Don't expect, however, to just have a quick drink on a shaded terrace along the Meuse during the high season. We were clearly asked to leave our table. And that seems to be the norm!

Very cute little town

I really liked my visit to Dinant. The town is pretty small but very charming. I recommend going up to visit the citadel, which offers a superb view of the surrounding area. The streets in the town center have lots of shops and are very lively. It is really pleasant to walk around there when the weather is nice.

The citadel, the shopping streets along the water

A beautiful discovery of a picturesque town in Belgium. There are two parts to visit: the town streets, which are full of shops, where you can stroll along the water, grab a bite to eat, and go shopping. There is also the cathedral to check out. For the second part, you take the funicular that brings you up to the citadel, where you have a magnificent view. The citadel is toured with an audio guide, and there is a small restaurant and some games for the kids.
