Visiting Lampang, Thailand beyond the tourist trail

Far less crowded than Chiang Mai, Lampang is a northern Thailand city defined by its preserved heritage and low-key pace. Known for its temples, horse-drawn carriages, and Burmese-influenced colonial architecture, it attracts those looking to trade the tour buses for a more authentic Thai experience.

Wat Phra That Lampang Luang: an iconic temple

Located about nine miles from the city center, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang ranks among the most significant temples in northern Thailand. This fortified sanctuary, which dates back to the 13th century, is celebrated for its classic Lanna architecture. Its massive gold-leaf-covered chedi and intricately carved wooden viharn make it a site that feels both majestic and deeply rooted in history.

The city center and Burmese influences

Lampang’s downtown area is characterized by traditional wooden houses and structures left behind by 19th-century Burmese merchants. Among these, Wat Si Rongmuang and Wat Sri Chum feature architecture inspired by Burma, complete with tiered roofs and fine wood carvings. Strolling along the Wang River is the best way to soak in the town's quiet charm.

Lampang’s horse carriages: a relic of the past

Lampang is the only city in Thailand where horse-drawn carriages are still used as a regular mode of transportation. This practice dates back to the colonial era and remains an unconventional way to tour the main temples and historic districts. While now focused on tourism, this local icon contributes to the city's distinct atmosphere.

Kad Kong Ta market and the weekend scene

Kad Kong Ta is a weekend night market held in the historic center. This pedestrian-friendly market is packed with street food stalls, local crafts, and clothing. It is the ideal spot to sample regional specialties while enjoying the evening activity. On weekdays, the Talad Gao market serves as a reliable alternative for catching a glimpse of daily local life.

Northern cuisine with mild and spicy flavors

Lampang’s food scene reflects northern Thai influences, featuring dishes that are bold in spice but less sugary than those found in the south. Khao soi, a curry noodle soup topped with chicken and coconut milk, is essential. Another local specialty is nam prik ong, a tomato and minced meat dip served with raw vegetables. For a drink, the coffee from the Lampang region is noted for its smooth profile.

Where to eat?

  • Riverside Restaurant (Center): A pleasant setting by the river, serving classic Thai dishes.
  • Long Jim New York Pizza (Center): For a Western-style break, this spot serves reliable pizza.
  • Aroy One Baht (Center): A local canteen where you can find authentic Thai meals for 50-150 THB (about $1.50-$4.50).
  • Krua Mukda (Center): A family-run restaurant specializing in northern Thai staples.

Where to stay?

  • Wienglakor Hotel (Center): A comfortable hotel with a traditional vibe.
  • Auangkham Resort (Near Wat Phra That): A quiet, wood-accented property, ideal for a relaxing stay.
  • The Riverside Guesthouse (Center): A friendly establishment offering nice views of the river.
  • Baan Suchadaa (Ban Tha Ma-O): An elegant guesthouse set in a lush, green environment.

When to go?

Lampang has a tropical climate with a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. Winter (December-January) is the best time to visit, as the temperatures are manageable.

The Wat Phra That Lampang Luang festival in February is a major cultural event.

How to get there?

Lampang is a one-hour flight from Bangkok via local carriers. The train is a scenic alternative, taking about 10 hours from Bangkok. By bus, the trip takes roughly 7 hours.

How to get around?

You can walk around the center of Lampang, but songthaews (shared taxis) are the standard way to get across town. For excursions outside the city limits, renting a scooter or a car is often the most practical choice.

Nice stop and not touristy

Markets with local produce and handmade crafts, temples not too crowded with tourists that still keep a real spiritual atmosphere, and a hilly, mountainous environment that offers pretty views... I enjoyed the 2 days I spent in Lampang

A glimpse of authentic Thailand

A small town that you pass through without high expectations, but which turns out to be very interesting to discover. Not too well known yet, you will see Thai city dwellers, shopkeepers, artisans, and farmers going about their daily lives, following a rather traditional way of life. A few pretty temples to visit.
Good surprise
