As the capital of the state of Veracruz, Xalapa is a sharp, academic city known for its deep artistic roots and lush, mountainous setting. With top-tier museums, dense public parks, and a significant student population, it draws both history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts.
A historic center balancing colonial and modern
The core of Xalapa is a mix of heritage architecture and contemporary infrastructure. The Cathédrale de Xalapa, dating back to the 17th century, anchors the main square with a restrained, elegant interior. Just a short walk away, Parque Juárez features a terrace with clear views of the surrounding mountains. This park is the city's living room, filled with street musicians and local vendors.
Deep cultural heritage
Xalapa is a major center for the arts. The Musée d'Anthropologie de Xalapa (MAX) ranks among the most important in Mexico, housing an extensive collection of Olmec, Totonac, and Huastec artifacts, including the iconic colossal Olmec heads. For modern art, the Pinacothèque Diego Rivera displays works by the legendary painter alongside other prominent Mexican artists.

Xalapa is 110 km from Veracruz, a 2-hour bus ride costing about 130 MXN (roughly $7). From Mexico City, the bus trip takes 4 hours and 30 minutes and costs about 380 MXN (roughly $20). The nearest airport is in Veracruz.
Getting around
The city center is walkable, but public transit and taxis are inexpensive and easy to use if you need to reach the outer neighborhoods.
The capital of the state of Veracruz is pretty cold, dense, and noisy. Located in the highlands, you easily lose 10 degrees in temperature and the cloud cover doesn't let a single ray of sunshine through. As for the monuments in the city center, there isn't anything too special. But the Anthropology Museum focused on the pre-Hispanic cultures of the Gulf of Mexico is worth the trip!
