Things to do in Santo Domingo: must-see attractions

Exploring Santo Domingo, the first colonial city of the Americas

The Colonial Zone: stepping back in time

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Colonial Zone is the historic heart of the city. You will find iconic landmarks here like the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor, the first cathedral in the Americas, and the Alcázar de Colón, the former residence of Christopher Columbus's son. Wander through cobblestone streets, such as the Calle Las Damas, to see architecture dating back to the 16th century, which feels as storied as the oldest quarters in Old San Juan.

Museums you should not miss

To dive deeper into Dominican history and culture, head to the Museum of the Royal Houses, which documents the colonial era. The Museum of Dominican Man explores the country's Taíno, African, and European roots. Finally, the Museum of Modern Art is a solid stop for those interested in local contemporary works.

Parks and green spaces: a nature break

Despite the high-energy urban pace, Santo Domingo offers a few quiet escapes. Mirador Sur Park is perfect for a walk or a bit of downtime. The Botanical Garden, located in the north of the city, showcases a wide variety of tropical plants. For something more unique, explore the Los Tres Ojos cave, a series of underground lakes surrounded by impressive rock formations.

Local gastronomy: authentic flavors

Santo Domingo is the best place to sample Dominican specialties. Try the bandera dominicana, a traditional dish of rice, red beans, and meat. Seafood is also a staple, particularly the fried fish served with tostones (fried plantains). For dessert, dulce de coco will satisfy any sweet tooth.

When to go

The best time to visit Santo Domingo is from December to April, during the dry season. Temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 77 to 86°F (25 to 30°C), with very little rain. The February Carnival is a highlight, featuring colorful parades and a festive atmosphere. Culture lovers can also plan for the Book Fair in April, a major literary celebration.

How to get there

Santo Domingo is served by Las Américas International Airport, located about 30 minutes from the city center. From the U.S., flights are frequent and usually range from $350 to $700 (about 20,000 to 40,000 DOP) for a round trip. Taxis and shuttles are available at the airport to take you into the city.

A cultural day

From Punta Cana, there are guided excursions that take you to visit the capital. It will take up a whole day, including at least 5 hours total on a bus. You have to be prepared for that, but it is worth it.
You will learn more about the history of the Dominican Republic. The moments that really stuck with me: the colonial neighborhood, the cathedral, Christopher Columbus's house, and the Three Eyes Park (Parque Los Tres Ojos) with its underground caves.
A bit far and a bit pricey, especially if you go in a small group. But honestly, spending 1 or 2 weeks tanning in a country on the other side of the Atlantic without making a little effort to learn something about its heritage would be a shame.
