Rue d'Alger

Where to stay in Algiers: the best neighbourhoods (2026)

Algiers is nicknamed 'the White', and you only have to arrive by sea to understand: the city rises in a vast amphitheatre of dazzling houses from the bay, its Ottoman Casbah piled on the hilltop, Unesco-listed, above the arcaded seafront France laid at its feet. Two cities stacked, the labyrinth and the grid, the Orient and the Mediterranean, gaze at each other top to bottom. Capital of a country-continent, long overlooked by travellers, Algiers now reveals itself to whoever takes the trouble to climb it.

The city reads from top to bottom, in four sectors sorted by the enthusiasm of Avygeo travellers. Rare on the Mediterranean's southern shore, the value is unbeatable: a hostel bed around 15 EUR, a comfortable double 40 to 90 EUR, more in the grand bay-view hotels. A modern metro, cable cars to the heights and yellow taxis serve a city that endlessly climbs and descends.

The Casbah & Place des Martyrs La médina ottomane, en haut

for history, the maze and atmosphere

The old, Unesco-listed heart: the Ottoman Casbah, a maze of stepped lanes, patio houses and palaces where the memory of the independence war still echoes, the Ketchaoua mosque and the Great Mosque (Djamaa el Kebir), the city's oldest, and at their foot the Place des Martyrs, gateway to the medina and the port. Fascinating and authentic, but partly run-down and hard to walk; you lodge rather at its base, in relative calm.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The metro, the cable car and the yellow taxi : Algiers endlessly climbs and descends: the modern metro links the centre and the east, cable cars lead to the heights, the Martyrs' memorial and Notre-Dame d'Afrique, and yellow taxis do the rest (fix the price or insist on the meter). From Houari Boumediene airport, reckon about thirty minutes off-peak. The seafront and the Casbah are walked, comfortable shoes essential.
  • Spring and autumn, neither the heatwave nor the rain : April-June and September-October offer the mildest climate and superb light on the bay. Summer is hot and humid, winter mild but rainy. Check the visa formalities before leaving, and keep in mind the rhythm of Friday, the day of rest, and of Ramadan, which shifts life towards the evening.
  • Couscous, makroud and a mint tea : Algeria is savoured generous: a Friday couscous, a chorba, a dolma, brik pastries and, to finish, makroud and a mint tea. On the port, taste grilled fish facing the sea. And take time for an old-style coffee in the centre, on the terrace of a brasserie inherited from the 1900s, to feel the city's pulse.
Where not to stay in Algiers (honestly)
  • Booking far out in the suburbs or near the airport to save: Algiers is lived in the centre and on its hills, and the price gap does not repay the long trips in dense traffic; aim for the centre or the heights.
  • Choosing a room in the heart of the Casbah without scouting: the medina, partly run-down and hard to reach by car, suits a first stay poorly; visit it by day and sleep at its base or in the centre.
  • Settling for a 'cheap' hotel far out: the city stretches along the bay and the traffic is dense; better a central quarter well served by the metro and taxis.
