Visiting the El-Hamma Botanical Garden

The El-Hamma Botanical Garden was established in 1832 following a proposal by French civil intendant Pierre Genty de Bussy. General Antoine Avisard, who served as interim governor, initiated the effort to drain the marshes located at the foot of the Colline des Arcades (Arcades Hill). This project covered 5 hectares (about 12 acres), serving as both a model farm and an experimental garden. In 1837, following the acquisition of 18 hectares (about 44 acres) located below the Fontaine des Platanes (Plane Tree Fountain), the garden expanded further west. It became the central government nursery, while the original site was known as the Petit Jardin (Small Garden) until 1848. At that time, the primary purpose of this green space was to supply trees to public agencies and settlers, while also serving as a site for raising cochineal insects for carmine dye.

Flowers at the Forefront

Today, the El-Hamma Botanical Garden maintains significant importance for the people of Algeria. For decades, it has served as a preferred spot for relaxation for residents of Algiers and visitors looking to experience the city from a different perspective. Beyond its role as a park, the garden is recognized internationally as one of the most notable botanical sites in the world. As such, it is a member of the BGCI (Botanic Garden Conservation International) network. The garden is defined by its strategic location, a high level of floral and faunal diversity, and its positive impact on urban quality of life. It remains a top choice for a stroll or for discovering the diverse living species native to North Africa.
