Visiting the El-Hamma Botanical Garden

The El-Hamma Botanical Garden was established in 1832 following a proposal by French civil intendant Pierre Genty de Bussy. General Antoine Avisard, who was also serving as interim governor, undertook the task of draining the marshes at the base of the Arcades Hill. The site initially spanned 5 hectares, functioning as both a model farm and a testing ground. In 1837, following the acquisition of 18 hectares situated beneath the fontaine des Platanes (Plane Trees Fountain), the garden relocated and expanded westward. It simultaneously became the central government nursery, while the original plot retained the name Petit Jardin (Small Garden) until 1848. At the time, the green space existed primarily to supply trees to public organizations and settlers. It also served as a site for raising cochineal insects for carmine dye.
