Grande Mosquée d'Alger

The Great Mosque of Algiers, a symbol of faith and modernity

Partially completed in 2019 and officially inaugurated in 2024, the Great Mosque of Algiers, or Djamaa El Djazair, is an imposing modern landmark that has become one of the most visible symbols of Algiers. Located along the bay of Algiers in the Mohammadia neighborhood, this mosque is now the third largest in the world, trailing only Mecca and Medina.

Monumental architecture

The Great Mosque of Algiers impresses with its sheer scale. It covers an area of 400,000 square meters and can accommodate up to 120,000 worshipers. Its minaret, standing at 265 meters, is the tallest in the world and offers a panoramic view of Algiers and the Mediterranean from its observation deck. The design blends traditional elements with contemporary style, featuring intricate Islamic motifs and modern materials, making it a unique sight to take in.

A cultural and spiritual center

Beyond its religious function, the Great Mosque of Algiers houses a cultural center. Visitors can explore a vast library, a museum of Islamic art, and a Quranic school. These facilities create a meeting point for spirituality and scholarship, where Islamic culture is showcased. It is designed as a space to foster dialogue between different cultures and civilizations.

Which areas can non-Muslims visit?

Most of the Great Mosque, including the prayer halls, is not open to non-Muslim visitors.

However, specific parts of the complex, such as the panoramic minaret observation deck, the library, the museum of Islamic art, and the cultural areas, are open to all visitors. Keep in mind that a strict dress code is enforced, requiring covered arms and ankles for everyone, as well as covered hair for women and covered knees for men. These areas allow you to appreciate the architecture and history of the site without entering the reserved religious spaces.

A landmark for the future

The Great Mosque of Algiers also embodies a vision of Islam oriented toward the future. By integrating modern building technologies and adhering to environmental standards, it symbolizes the desire of Algeria to embrace a path of modernity while respecting religious traditions.

Impressive

Huge minaret that dominates the city, this new mosque sparks curiosity. A part is open to non-practitioners, and even without visiting everything, you really get a sense that the place is majestic.

Part of the mosque is open to the public

I was pretty surprised to learn that a part of the mosque is open to the public, meaning to non-Muslims.
I took advantage of it and I am happy with my choice. It is brand new and elegant, but above all, you can go up to the top of the minaret and have a spectacular view of Algiers.
