The Rijksmuseum is the most visited museum in the Netherlands, so expect crowds. Operating as an art gallery since 1800, it reopened in 2013 after a decade of renovations. Today, it is the premier museum in Amsterdam, showcasing Dutch Golden Age masters like Vermeer, Hals, and Steen. Its crown jewel is The Night Watch (De Nachtwacht) by Rembrandt.
The story of Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager who hid with her family in Amsterdam during World War II to escape Nazi persecution, is known worldwide. Tucked away behind their spice shop, they lived in total seclusion for two years. Frank wrote her diary here, later published in over 60 languages. In 1960, the Anne Frank House opened as a museum documenting their time in these rooms.
The Van Gogh Museum holds the largest collection of the artist's work in the world. See over 200 paintings, including Sunflowers, The Bedroom, and Almond Blossom. The chronological layout follows his rapid evolution, moving from his early dark Dutch period to his colorful years in the South of France over just one decade.
Located at Oosterdok in Amsterdam, the NEMO Science Museum is a hub for science and technology. Nearly 20,000 items trace breakthroughs from the 19th and 20th centuries, covering electricity, sound, gravity, and digital tech. Designed by Renzo Piano, the building features a sleek, modern aesthetic, plus a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Amsterdam.

Right by the train station, this science museum is a must-do with kids. For me, it is not really a museum in the strict sense. It is more about booths and small demonstrations, which are certainly interesting for introducing young people to science, but there are not really any collections to admire. We went with friends and we were disappointed by the visit.
Plus, the entrance fee is quite expensive, and you often have to wait in line to see the different experiments. My best memory is still the roof of the building, which offers a pretty view of the city. Be careful, the signs are only in English and Dutch. You will therefore have to translate for the kids.
Although this museum isn't the most well-known in Amsterdam, I had a lot of fun during the visit. It's a playful museum that really gets you involved. It's perfect if you have kids. You can touch thin…

I am not always a huge fan of 19th-century painters, but I have to admit I appreciate Van Gogh's work and his unique style. As for the museum itself, I found the rooms were well organized, and the explanations regarding his journey and technique were very clear. It is a true immersion into the artist's world, and I can only recommend this museum to all art lovers.

The Anne Frank House is a very moving place, especially if you have read her diary. Walking through the narrow rooms where she lived makes you feel the fear, but also the hope of this family during World War II. Go with your children if you have the chance, it is a very good way to talk about the Holocaust with them.

I had heard about it in my history books, and after rereading The Diary of Anne Frank, I really wanted to see this symbolic place for myself. It is quite moving to enter this house full of memories, especially the Secret Annex, which is kept in its original state. The museum section presents photos, videos, and period documents that explain the suffering of the Jewish people in a very educational way. The tour with the audio guide is very informative and lasts about an hour. Make sure to book six weeks in advance to guarantee your visit.

What a joy to admire this vast collection of masterpieces! I have seen many Van Goghs elsewhere, but never so many gathered in one place. The famous Sunflowers, The Bedroom, the self-portraits, and a selection of sketches show the painter’s artistic journey, which you discover from a very personal angle. The museum also features other Impressionist canvases, including some by Gauguin and Monet.
Unfortunately, it is very crowded. I recommend booking in advance and going at opening time or at the very end of the day.
