Visiting Lello Bookstore: An Architectural Gem in the Heart of Porto

Editor's note, updated December 26, 2024

Lello Bookstore, located in the historic center of Porto, is consistently ranked among the most beautiful bookstores and libraries in the world. This landmark, a favorite for literature and architecture enthusiasts, is worth a visit for its singular atmosphere and intricate detailing.

A dramatic setting

Founded in 1906, Lello Bookstore is defined by its neo-Gothic style. Upon entry, you are greeted by a facade covered in sculpted details and stained-glass windows. Inside, the space is a work of art, featuring ornate ceilings, detailed woodwork, and a spectacular central crimson staircase. The staircase is one of the most photographed elements of the interior and is a primary reason for the shop's fame.

A rich literary collection

Beyond its architecture, the bookstore carries an extensive selection of titles, ranging from Portuguese classics to international works. You will also find special editions and souvenirs tied to the cultural history of Porto. While the space can feel tight due to the high volume of visitors, the literary selection remains broad and diverse.

Tips for your visit

Access to Lello Bookstore requires a ticket, which functions as a voucher deductible from any book purchase. To avoid long lines, book your entry online in advance and aim for the early morning or late afternoon. Even though the shop is often crowded, especially during peak season, its character makes it a worthwhile stop, particularly for those who appreciate historic sites.

The Harry Potter legend

A frequent connection is drawn between Lello Bookstore and the world of Harry Potter, though this remains more of a legend than a proven fact.

The origins of the myth

Author J.K. Rowling lived in Porto during the early 1990s, a period when she worked as an English teacher. According to popular stories, she frequented Lello Bookstore during her time in the city. Some believe the crimson staircase and the neo-Gothic atmosphere influenced her descriptions of magical locations in the Harry Potter series, such as the Flourish and Blotts shop in Diagon Alley or the moving staircases of Hogwarts.

What J.K. Rowling says

However, J.K. Rowling herself has clarified on several occasions that she never wrote Harry Potter in Porto nor specifically designed the world based on elements from the city. She has acknowledged that her time in Portugal was an important chapter in her life.

A persistent myth that adds mystery

Regardless, the supposed connection to Harry Potter contributes to the current popularity of the store, drawing many fans of the famous wizard. This association, while partially mythologized, adds a layer of mystery and interest for travelers who visit to see for themselves this bookstore with an aesthetic that feels plucked from a magical setting.

Extraordinary setting

I love old bookstores and I had heard a lot about this one. It is a magical place! The woodwork, the incredible structure of the staircase, and the stained glass windows blew me away. I do not know if the decor really inspired Harry Potter, but I felt very close to that universe.

It is a shame that the place is so crowded, as it is hard to move around. Make sure to book a time slot in advance. Entrance costs about 15 euros and includes a 10 euro voucher to buy a book. I think that is a nice concept, even if the bookstore mostly sells major literary classics.

Every reader's dream

Visiting this gorgeous bookstore is one of my best memories of Porto. Its famous staircase definitely lives up to its reputation. Even though the crowds can make it hard to wander through the place like you would want to, it is a real treat to touch, smell, and flip through the different books. As for the legend about J.K. Rowling, I do not know if it is true, but it is definitely intriguing.

Hard to resist, and yet!

On paper, this bookstore is a must-see: opened in 1906, considered the most beautiful in Europe, and supposedly inspired J.K. Rowling for some of the Hogwarts sets. ... In reality, you end up waiting in an endless line with very strict time slots and paying €10 ($11) just to get in. Inside, only the central double-entry wooden staircase is worth the trip, since the selection of books is unfortunately very limited and really aimed at tourists (The Little Prince, Harry Potter...). There are few books and very little room to move around, but for book fans... it is hard to resist a visit! The pleasant surprise is that you get a discount on a book equal to the price of your entrance ticket!

Beautiful but cramped compared to the crowds

Beautiful bookstore/library, but a bit dark, and above all way too cramped given how crowded it gets. I thought this place inspired Harry Potter, but some people say that is fake news? Who knows?
All in all, you pay €8 for admission, and then you have to pay ridiculously high prices if you want to buy a book there.
In short, this bookstore is taking advantage of its fame to make a ton of cash. We will see if that lasts in the long run?
