Visiting Avenida Paulista

As the primary artery of São Paulo, Brazil, and arguably the most significant thoroughfare in the Americas, the nearly 3-kilometer Avenida Paulista is frequently compared to the Champs-Élysées in France. The street was originally conceived by the local elite in the late 19th century as a prime location for private residences near the city center. However, the avenue was radically reshaped during the 1960s, shifting from a collection of mansions and private estates to the dense cluster of skyscrapers that now defines the skyline of a major American metropolis.

One of the world's most powerful avenues

Today, Avenida Paulista serves as a hub for major financial institutions, corporate headquarters, and national and international media outlets. Real estate prices along this corridor are among the highest in the Americas. Most of the historic homes have been demolished, though the Joaquim de Mello mansion, built in 1905 at number 8, remains one of the few surviving landmarks from when the city's high society called this district home.

Avenida Paulista stretches across several São Paulo neighborhoods, including Paraiso, Bela Vista, Cerqueira César, and Consolação. Every Sunday, the avenue is closed to vehicle traffic, becoming a popular pedestrian space for residents. The street is also served by Line 2 of the metro system.

Sights along Avenida Paulista

While walking the avenue, make time for the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), which houses an extensive collection spanning from antiquity to the present day. Directly across the street is Parque Tenente Siqueira Campos, also known as Parque Trianon, which features native flora from the Mata Atlântica (Atlantic Forest). It serves as a pocket of greenery in the middle of the concrete. Finally, the Casa das Rosas, now a center dedicated to poetry, is also worth a visit.

Brazil's Champs-Elysees

The most beautiful avenue in the city and one of the most beautiful in the world, just like 5th Avenue, the Champs-Élysées, or Avenida Atlantica (RJ). On Sundays, it is closed to traffic. You will find street concerts, street theater, political meetings, and tons of people working out by biking, running, or even skateboarding. Otherwise, there are lots of shops and businesses nearby and an enormous amount of traffic.
