Visiting the Anastasis Church
Architecturally speaking, Santorini reads like a design magazine spread. Built entirely of curves and carved niches, it rejects rigid geometry in favor of a distinct signature style. True to the palette of the Cyclades, brilliant white coats every building, offset by deep blues that mirror the Aegean Sea. Religious architecture follows this exact color scheme. With nearly 550 churches across the island, split between Orthodox and Catholic traditions, every village holds architectural gems. Imerovigli, famous for the rock of Skaros, hides a standout jewel within its winding alleys: the Anastasis Church, locally known as Agios Anastasios.
A striking, romantic setting
Located 2 km from Fira, the island capital, Imerovigli sprawls across the highest cliffs on the island, making for an imposing sight. Perched at an altitude of 330 metres, it is often called the balcony of the Aegean, framing sweeping views of the Caldera. Despite the rugged terrain, the village retains an intimate charm, and its churches match the striking architecture of the local cave houses. The Anastasis Church, or Agios Anastasios, checks every box for a postcard destination. Its azure blue dome, topped with small spikes and a white cross, rivals the famous triple domes of Oia. The blinding white of its smooth walls contrasts sharply against the sky, while an ornate bell tower featuring its own smaller blue cupola completes the composition, alongside a small terrace for taking in the view.
Couples frequently choose it as a wedding backdrop, drawn to the dramatic height and romantic setting. A low cobblestone wall runs alongside the courtyard, drawing visitors eager to photograph it from every angle, sometimes forgetting that it remains an active place of worship.
I found everything I expected in Santorini. So, I wasn't disappointed, except for the number of tourists there. The blue dome of the church and its white walls are truly magnificent, facing the sea. The setting is superb, with little narrow streets. Whether you go in the morning, the afternoon, or during the sunset, you will fully enjoy it.
