Visiting the Museum of Broken Relationships

You will find the renowned Museum of Broken Relationships in the heart of the Croatian capital, where it has been based in Zagreb since 2010. If you are looking for an unconventional exhibition, this collection dedicated to failed love stories is a must. Head into the historic Old Town of Zagreb to find the museum housed inside a traditional baroque building known as Kulmer Palace.

An innovative museum dedicated to the end of romantic relationships

The museum originated from the personal breakup of Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić. The concept was to create a space for objects that mark the end of a relationship. The items on display are diverse and seemingly ordinary, including garden gnomes, bicycles, and toys.

Each object carries a heavy emotional weight. They are accompanied by placards that recount the specific love story associated with each witness to a past romance. In 2011, the Museum of Broken Relationships received the Kenneth Hudson Award, recognizing it as the most innovative museum in Europe.

Staging the emotions of a breakup

The Museum of Broken Relationships specializes in exhibiting mundane items belonging to anonymous individuals. The contrast between the banality of these objects and the intensity of the emotions they convey is what makes this museum compelling. Visitors often find themselves identifying with these stories and feeling a sense of empathy.

The museum also highlights the global, historical, political, and social dimensions that shape each individual and impact our most intimate lives. The sense of collective catharsis found here leaves a lasting impression on visitors. As proof of its impact, a replica of the museum was opened in Los Angeles in 2016.

Really original

I really liked visiting this museum, which is a real change from everything else we know. It showcases breakups through objects and personal stories. I thought it was super cool, and I didn't see the time go by. It is easy to identify with the stories being told, which are sometimes funny and sometimes very sad.

Original theme, though a bit repetitive

Like many others, we visited this museum because of its unique subject matter. In the end, it is just real breakup stories on display, accompanied by various objects. The biographer in me got caught up in it and I really enjoyed discovering these accounts. Even so, it does get repetitive. There is a lot of reading, so it is better to visit alone.

Unique idea, but pretty disappointing

I wasn't really sure what to expect when visiting this museum, but I was hoping to have fun or be surprised at every turn.
Actually, not really. You will find a lot of real-life stories about breakups here. A bit disappointed.
