A buried street beneath the old town

Beneath the cobblestones of the Royal Mile, a 17th-century alleyway was frozen in time when new buildings were constructed right over it. This subterranean exploration dives into the little-known daily lives of past Edinburgh residents, balancing shadows with authentic stories.

The tour experience

A costumed guide portraying a historic character leads visitors for one hour through this maze of preserved narrow lanes. They recount the harsh living conditions of the era, the outbreaks of the plague, and several persistent local legends.

What makes the place unique

Unlike a traditional museum, here you walk literally through the remains of an entire street, complete with houses, nooks, and a preserved atmosphere. A multilingual audio guide lets you follow the commentary in several languages, complementing the guide's storytelling in English.

Friendly tip: History buffs, fans of unusual stories, and families with older children.

Less suitable: Individuals with claustrophobia or sensitivity to tight, dimly lit underground spaces.

Who it is for

This guided tour suits anyone looking for an immersive experience rather than a standard exhibit, featuring occasional narrow passages and a deliberately dark ambiance to recreate the living conditions of the period.

Dramatized tour of times gone by

In groups of about ten people, a guide takes you to different parts of Real Mary King's Close, sharing stories about these places where the city's poor lived in unsanitary conditions.

A few videos share the personal stories of former residents or a doctor who worked there. One of the main themes is the plague that hit the area, which wiped out a good part of the population crammed into small enclosed spaces, along with the story of a doctor who was promised a fortune to come treat and stop the disease.

The place has a whole dark reputation, haunted spots, and morbid stories surrounding it... a bit overhyped, there was honestly nothing scary about it. On the flip side, it was very educational.

Quick tip: if you want, you can get an audio guide to listen to the explanations in your language... I probably should have asked for one. My English is pretty decent, but I didn't catch everything the guide was saying (ah, that Scottish accent...)
