Chichén Itzá

Where to stay near Chichen Itza: the 4 areas to know in 2026

Three of our four members describe the same moment: the shadow coming down the steps of El Castillo at the equinoxes. Bill tells it in detail, « the architects of the castillo, the great pyramid, had designed and oriented this stone structure in a way that creates optical illusions on the days of the equinox ». INAH sets its spring arrangements on 20, 21 and 22 March 2026, and the 2025 edition drew 32,872 people.

For the rest of the year, it is not the distance that decides, it is the hour. The site opens at 8am, the last entry is at 4pm, and the coaches from the coast take 148 minutes from Cancún, 104 from Tulum: they arrive when Cococha writes « it gets pretty crowded ». Four areas share the nights: the site's own grounds, Pisté at 6.2 kilometres, Valladolid at 41.8, then the big bases, from 104 to 148 minutes.

The site's own grounds, behind the gate A private entrance, and the ruins at the end of the garden

Anyone who wants to be inside at 8am, before the coaches

Two houses stand within the archaeological zone itself and have their own door onto it: that is the only way to be in front of El Castillo at opening, two hours before the coaches from the coast. Our scored address here holds 8.7 across more than 550 reviews, with a location rated 9.4. The counterpart is not the price but the isolation: Pisté is 6.2 kilometres away, and there is nothing else within walking distance.

Unlike quite a few other archaeological sites in Mexico, these are very well preserved

This is the area of the lowest prices, and the one where leaving at 7.30am takes no effort at all. The big bases: Mérida, Tulum and Cancún From 104 to 148 minutes, and as much coming back

Anyone here for the coast who adds a day trip

This is where the coaches start from, and the choice of anyone who came for something else first: Tulum is 123.5 kilometres and 104 minutes away, Mérida 126 kilometres and 106 minutes, Cancún 202.1 kilometres and 148 minutes. Double that across the day, and expect a mid-morning arrival, when the crowd is already there. Two of these towns have their own guide with us, street by street: the cards below lead there, and we copy none of their addresses.

I found the part about the Mayan ball court particularly interesting

Cancun Stay in the city Where to stay in Cancun Cancun has its own guide: neighbourhoods, prices, our recommended hotels.
Tulum Stay in the city Where to stay in Tulum Tulum has its own guide: neighbourhoods, prices, our recommended hotels.

Pros

  • Whole towns, and the coast for the rest of the stay
  • The Cancún and Tulum guides detail their neighbourhoods
  • No night to move if the stay is a beach one

Cons

  • From 104 to 148 minutes, and the same drive in the evening
  • A mid-morning arrival, along with the coaches
  • The last entry is at 4pm, and clearing starts at 4.30pm

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The site opens at 8am and closes its ticket desks at 4pm: everything else follows: INAH opens every day from 8am to 5pm, gives its last entry at 4pm and starts clearing the site at 4.30pm. Put those three times against the driving times and the choice of where to sleep makes itself: eight minutes from Pisté, forty-four from Valladolid, 104 from Tulum and 148 from Cancún. The coaches that leave the coast at dawn therefore arrive mid-morning, and that is the moment when Cococha found that « it gets pretty crowded ». A night less than ten minutes away buys two hours of a nearly empty site, not a comfort.
  • At the March equinoxes, 32,872 people and rules of their own: Three of our four members mention the shadow of the serpent on the steps of El Castillo, and it is to see it that the site has its three busiest days of the year. The 2026 arrangements cover Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March: opening at 9am on the Friday, at 8am on the Saturday and Sunday, ticket desks closed at 4pm, clearing at 5.30pm. The 2025 edition drew 32,872 people. Ceremonies of any kind are forbidden, drones too, and professional photography equipment requires prior authorisation. The « Noches de Kukulcán » show only takes place on the Friday, at 7.30pm: only the two closest areas allow you to attend without driving at night.
  • What entry costs, and why there is only one queue now: A foreign visitor pays $38*, that is $5.70* of federal fee and $32* of State of Yucatán fee. Since 27 March 2026, both are paid at a single desk: the double queue that used to surprise everybody no longer exists. Under-13s enter free, and residents of Yucatán pay $5.70* on presentation of an identity document. The amount does not depend on the area where you sleep, and that is precisely what makes the arrival time decisive: at an equal entry price, the site at 8am and the site in mid-morning are not the same place.
  • A guide, two of our members make it a condition: « Having a guide is essential to enjoy a half-day visit to the site », writes julies_journeys. Bill describes his own, « a very, very nice guide who made us laugh with a few French expressions showed us the different areas and buildings of the ancient Mayan city », and it is from that guide that he learned about the optical illusions of the equinox. Guides are hired at the entrance, and their length, half a day, sets the format of the visit. Consequence for the night: half a day on the site plus a cenote fills a whole day, which works from the grounds or from Pisté and is tight from the big bases.
  • What the site makes accessible, and what it no longer allows: INAH announces ramps and adapted access for wheelchairs: the ground is stony in places, but the main part, the one with the great temples, can be covered. On the other hand, nobody climbs the steps of El Castillo any more, and our four reviews note it without complaining: traveler1 observes that « you can still perfectly see the steps, the tiers, and the snakes carved along the edges ». The ball court, which julies_journeys found « particularly interesting », is visited on the flat, as is the temple of a thousand columns.
Where not to stay near Chichen Itza
  • Arriving after 4pm: that is the time of the last entry, and clearing starts at 4.30pm.
  • Aiming for the Friday equinox show from Cancún: 148 minutes of night driving on the way back.
  • Counting on a double queue at the desks: both fees are paid together since 27 March 2026.
  • Planning a ceremony or a drone on equinox days: both are forbidden.

FAQ: where to stay near Chichen Itza

What time should you arrive?
At opening, 8am, and that is the argument of this page. The last entry is at 4pm, clearing starts at 4.30pm, and the coaches take 104 minutes from Tulum and 148 from Cancún: they arrive mid-morning, at the moment when Cococha found that « it gets pretty crowded ». From the grounds or from Pisté, being inside at 8am does not require getting up before 7am; from Valladolid, you have to leave around 7.15am.
How much does entry cost?
$38* for a foreign visitor: $5.70* of federal fee and $32* of State of Yucatán fee, paid at a single desk since 27 March 2026. Under-13s enter free, and residents of Yucatán pay $5.70* with an identity document. The price is the same whichever area you sleep in: what proximity buys is the hour, not a discount.
Can you sleep on the site itself?
Yes, two houses stand within the perimeter of the archaeological zone and have their own door, which allows you to be in front of El Castillo at opening. Our scored address there holds 8.7 across more than 550 reviews, with a location rated 9.4; the second is served without a score, for want of two concordant readings. In exchange, there is nothing within walking distance beyond the site: Pisté, its taquerias and its grocers are 6.2 kilometres away.
Valladolid or Pisté?
Pisté for the hour, Valladolid for the stay. Pisté has 5,528 inhabitants and stands 6.2 kilometres from the gate, eight minutes; its scored address holds 7.9 across more than 1,100 reviews. Valladolid has 48,973 inhabitants, arcaded streets and cenotes in town, and carries the three best scores on this page, from 8.4 to 9.4; but it takes 41.8 kilometres and forty-four minutes, so a departure around 7.15am. Ek Balam, the other Mayan city, is 71.4 kilometres from the site.
Do you need a guide?
Two of our four members make it a condition. « Having a guide is essential to enjoy a half-day visit to the site », writes julies_journeys; Bill learned about the optical illusions of the equinox from his guide, and describes the tour of the different areas of the ancient city. Guides are hired at the entrance. Count half a day: that format is what makes it possible to add a cenote during the day, 3.3 kilometres away for the nearest one.
What happens at the equinoxes?
The shadow comes down the steps of El Castillo, and the site has its three busiest days: the 2026 arrangements cover Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March, and 32,872 people were there in 2025. Opening at 9am on the Friday, at 8am on the other two days, ticket desks closed at 4pm, clearing at 5.30pm. Ceremonies and drones forbidden, professional photography by authorisation. The « Noches de Kukulcán » show only takes place on the Friday, at 7.30pm, which calls for a night eight minutes away at most if you are not to drive back in the dark.
