Petit Sperone Beach: A Caribbean-style slice of paradise in Corsica

The sand crunches underfoot, a white so bright it almost looks fake. The water shifts between turquoise and emerald depending on the sun. Tucked between two rocky headlands covered in scrub brush, Petit Sperone Beach stretches its ribbon of fine sand toward Piana Island. This is not just another beach. It is a concentrated dose of Mediterranean beauty that has remained largely untouched.

Why make the trip?

Located at the extreme southern tip of the island, fifteen minutes from Bonifacio, this beach is part of the Réserve Naturelle des Bouches de Bonifacio (Bonifacio Strait Nature Reserve). Its protected status explains the pristine condition. There are no buildings or unnecessary facilities, just raw, natural beauty.

Petit Sperone spans less than a hundred meters, but it makes up for its size with sheer visual impact. The ultra-fine white sand, free of seagrass, contrasts sharply with the ochre rocks framing it. Offshore, the Lavezzi Islands and Sardinia define the horizon. This beach requires a bit of effort to reach, but every step of the trail is worth the reward.

The coastal trail: A walk worth taking

From the Piantarella parking lot, the path starts along the beach of the same name before climbing onto a coastal trail that winds through maritime pines and fragrant brush. Expect a fifteen-minute walk at a steady pace. The path passes the remains of a Roman villa dating from the 1st to the 4th century, a former trading post complete with docks and warehouses.

A staircase leads directly down to the cove. The view from the top sets the stage. The clear water reveals every detail of the sandy bottom, and the contrast between the white sand and blue sea is immediate.

Local tip: Arrive before 10 AM in July or August, otherwise the small beach fills up quickly and loses its appeal. Off-season, from May to June and September to October, you can enjoy this gem in a much more peaceful atmosphere.

Swimming and marine exploration

The water is crystal clear, making it perfect for snorkeling. Around the rocks bordering the cove, you will see plenty of fish and seagrass beds. The water deepens quickly, providing good swimming zones. On calm days, the turquoise water invites you to spend hours in this natural pool.

You can also access the beach by sea. Rent a kayak or paddleboard at Piantarella to reach Petit Sperone by water. This approach adds an adventurous dimension and offers different perspectives on the surrounding cliffs and coves.

Extend the experience to Grand Sperone

If you have more energy, continue the trail for another fifteen minutes along the Sperone golf course, which is consistently ranked among the most beautiful courses in the world. You will reach Grand Sperone Beach, a larger twin to the first, edged with spectacular reddish rocks. You will find even more tranquility there.

Our advice:

  • Bring water, sunscreen, and a parasol, as there is no natural shade on the sand.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes for the trail.
  • The beach is non-smoking, so please respect the rule.
  • Pack out all your trash, as you are in a nature reserve.
  • Avoid the beach when there is an east wind, as the fine sand tends to get everywhere.
  • Bring a mask and snorkel to explore the rocky areas.

The pearl of Bonifacio

During a trip to Bonifacio, at the southern tip of Corsica, this is the beach I recommend. From the parking lot, plan on walking for about thirty minutes. You also need to plan on bringing water, food, etc., because there are no facilities. The water is calm, warm, and clean. There are little rocky spots that shelter fish to look at with a mask and snorkel. A really nice spot and not super crowded.
