Visiting the Citadel of Bonifacio
The Citadel of Bonifacio, perched on a limestone cliff, is one of the most recognizable sites in Corsica. Established in the 9th century by Tuscans, this fortress offers views over the Mediterranean and the Strait of Bonifacio.
Walking through the fortified old town
As you wander the narrow alleyways of the fortified old town, you will encounter historical buildings, old churches, and houses with traditional facades. The climb to the Bastion de l'Étendard, the largest bastion in France, allows you to delve into the history of Bonifacio and take in the expansive panoramas.
Citadel highlights
Do not miss the Escalier du Roi d'Aragon (King of Aragon's Staircase), a series of 187 steps carved directly into the cliff, said to have been constructed in a single night by Aragonese troops. The history and the views make the climb worth the effort.
The citadel also houses several museums, such as the Musée de la Mer (Maritime Museum), where you can learn about the maritime past of Bonifacio. During your walk, you can also visit the Église Sainte-Marie-Majeure (Church of Saint Mary Major) and the Chapelle Saint-Roch (Chapel of Saint Roch).
In the evening, take advantage of the restaurants and cafes within the citadel to sample Corsican specialties while watching the sunset over the sea.
Things to do in the surrounding area
Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the hiking trails around the citadel, which provide views of the cliffs, sea caves, and secluded beaches. A boat tour departing from the port of Bonifacio allows you to explore the cliffs and caves from a closer vantage point.
The Citadel of Bonifacio is one of the most beautiful. The view is already superb. But you can also feel that this is a fortress that has withstood many invasions. History is present on all sides. For example, I really love the King of Aragon staircase, literally carved into the cliff! The citadel is truly on the edge of the cliff, which gives it a dizzying feel. You get the impression that it could fall into the sea at any moment!
